Poem For You

I wrote a poem for you

Last night,

When the Santoor played a tune

So enthralling

I had to drown

I took the pen and scratched the surface

Of a pristine paper

To write a few words and make it less pious

Than the thoughts

That was sinking me deep

In their silent embrace

But, the santoor needed me

For the endless melodies everlasting

Would go on and live on

As pointless as the arrow that has no target

Like the words with no audience

Like the thoughts with no words

Like the mind with no thoughts

Like a body with no mind

Like a soul without a body

And existence without a soul

The melodies needed me to bring them home

I wonder if they feel trapped

As we often do -

Trap the idea of love

Onto a finite being

And expect infinite outcomes

And feel as the net cuts our soul

As the love tries to escape the deathly embrace

We put it in

I thought to myself,

The melodies surely deserved a rhyme

To show I tried

To bind them although in a golden cage

To make them exist beyond an age

Where our deaths can’t do us apart

Where our ends will inspire several starts

And in selfish tales, we will be counted eternal

That’ll disregard anything remotely carnal

And then I and you, will lose our beings

Become ideas and outlast mortal springs

And my poem, will cease to be a personal affair

As soon as I pour it into paper and give it air

What an irony!

As I was going through the battle of the head and the mind

The hands that played the santoor slowly resigned

The mind and the head were fighting there too

Offering to do what they always knew

The moment the melodies left the Santoor

It won’t be their own

As soon as they flew, they will seek the ears

Of strangers unknown

To evoke love, poetry and desire

To raise the dead off the pyre

To be unwillingly trapped in inks on paper

Where their essence can only taper

But if they don’t leave at all,

They won’t exist

Perhaps, that’s why for melodies to

Persist

The head must loose and the heart must always win,

The poet must lose for the world to witness what it has never seen

For melodies / poetry to exist,

One can only give!

Lovers must “die”

For love to live!
