Staying friends?
How do you transition from being in a relationship with someone you are deeply attached to, to being just friends?
I am having a very hard time grasping and accepting the concept and reality of it.
@1in8billion thank you for sharing this with the community. <3
i hear you. i know how difficult it is to get from deep attachment within a relationship, to being just friends.
here are some recommendations I have found:
Give Yourself Time to Heal: Take some time apart to process the end of the romantic relationship and allow yourself to heal emotionally. This will give you the space to gain perspective and clarity on your feelings.
Communicate Openly: Honest communication is crucial during this transition. Have an open and honest conversation with your ex-partner about your desire to remain friends. Discuss your feelings, expectations, and concerns, and encourage them to do the same.
Establish Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries to avoid any confusion or potential hurt feelings. This may include defining what behaviors are acceptable and what are not, especially if either of you starts dating someone new.
Gradual Contact: Instead of immediately jumping into a deep friendship, start with casual and gradual contact. Allow time for the dynamics to shift naturally. This could involve occasional texts, group gatherings, or casual coffee meetings.
Focus on Platonic Activities: When you do spend time together, engage in activities that emphasize friendship rather than romance. This could be pursuing shared hobbies, going to events, or hanging out in group settings.
Manage Expectations: It's important to manage expectations on both sides. Understand that the nature of your relationship has changed, and it might not be exactly the same as it was before. Be open to a new dynamic and accept that things might be different.
Be Mindful of Feelings: Keep in mind that one or both of you might still have lingering feelings. It's essential to be aware of these emotions and address them as they arise. If necessary, take a step back to reassess and communicate openly about any challenges.
Seek Support: If the transition becomes challenging, consider seeking support from friends, family, or a therapist. Talking to someone neutral can provide valuable insights and emotional support.
Be Patient: Friendships, like any relationship, take time to evolve. Be patient and give the friendship the opportunity to develop naturally. Don't force the process or rush things.
Evaluate Regularly: Periodically evaluate how both of you are feeling about the friendship. Check in on each other's comfort levels and make adjustments as needed. Regular communication is key to maintaining a healthy and successful friendship.
what do you think? please let me know. :) i hope they are helpful!
Thanks for the tips. The main thing I struggle with is that I’m the one that really wants to continue with the romaric relationship.
I am so deeply connected to her that I’m not sure if I want to totally let go of her and if being friends with her is what it takes to keep her in my life I am willing to go that route. I just don’t know if that’s a sane thing to do, nor do I know what to expect.
@1in8billion This has happened to me on certain occasions. One minute you are all having a good time calling and sending love emojis, then next it goes to just being friends. It hurts a lot knowing that the person you were emotionally invested in is just a friend, can be a painful reality to accept.
I going through a lot of emotions right now trying to figure out what to say or do. One moment I feel this deep immense emptiness. Then I feel saddened to the point of wanting to cry. Then I get angry to the point that I’m angry at everyone/everything around me. Then I get into this “don’t care anymore” attitude where I’m totally okay with it. Then I get confused because I start thinking how it will look moving forward. Then the cycle repeats.
I’m not sure if this is how I’m supposed to deal with this or feel.
