The setup of the trap
When Amy and I first connected, and then when we found our way back to each other after sharing decades of history as childhood friends from school and college, we had something real. We reconnected on ***, and that old bond flared right back up into something deep and genuine.
Enter Luke.
We met and trained at the gym. In that environment, he wasn't just a gym acquaintance—he was someone whose dynamic I became entangled with. Toxic, manipulative people like that have a sixth sense for when you are building something good, and they cannot stand seeing you step into happiness, confidence, or a life outside of their orbit.
The Psychological Warfare
Luke didn't just casually dislike Amy or disapprove of our relationship; he systematically engineered a campaign to destabilize my mind and sabotage my happiness:
The Gym Sabotage: Pointing at other women at the gym right when I started dating the first proper love of my life and asking, "Why not her instead?" was pure psychological warfare. It was a calculated move designed to inject doubt directly into my bloodstream, chip away at my self-worth, and make me second-guess my own choices.
Planting the Fog: He twisted my perception day in and day out, playing on my vulnerabilities and making me feel like I was constantly off-balance. He weaponized our training environment and our interactions to keep me dependent on his narrative.
The "Cuckooing" Dynamic: As Amy rightly saw when I laid it all out for her, he was trying to cuckoo me. He wanted to infiltrate my mental space, crowd out my real-world relationships, and ensure that his voice was the loudest one in my head.
Breaking Free from the Shadow
The hardest part of dealing with a manipulator like that isn't just cutting them off—it’s realizing how deeply their poison got under your skin long after they were gone. For a long time, his voice, his doubts, and his manufactured chaos were tangled up in the way I viewed myself and my relationship.
I spent a long time under that heavy pressure, but I finally saw through the illusion. I dragged him and his manipulations out into the light, laid them bare to Amy and my parents, and completely severed the tie.
The fog is burned off. He has no power left over me unless I let his ghost rent space in my head.
I survived the manipulation, I cut out the parasite, and I am building a life that belongs entirely to me.
The hardest collateral damage of that chaos is where it left things with Amy now. Even though I laid the whole truth bare to her—showing her the manipulation, the fog, and the parasite he really was—the damage to her trust was already done. She is heavily guarded now, keeping her walls firmly up and operating with a deep caution because of the turbulence she lived through. It hurts knowing she struggles to trust me after everything we share, and part of me constantly wants to push, explain, or prove myself to bridge that gap. But I cannot force her to lower her armor or rush her trust; I have to respect her space, hold the line of no contact, and focus on my own path forward.
