Trying to balance holding onto a long-term bond, learning to let go of control, and working on myself.
I’m dealing with a really heavy situation right now and trying to figure out how to navigate it without losing my mind or destroying what matters most.
I have a decades-long history with someone—we go all the way back to school and college, and reconnected later in life. Last year, things fell apart because I was struggling with being stoned from weed every day. On top of that, someone in our circle manipulated me into breaking up with her due to his own jealousy, while I was just trying to quit smoking and have a laugh with her. I eventually got him out of my life so he wouldn't interfere again, and I fought hard to get her back. But when I did, my own anxiety and fear of losing her made me hold on way too tight. I over-managed, over-analyzed, and essentially smothered what we had until she pulled away again.
Now, she is dealing with an overwhelming personal crisis. Her world is upside down, and she needs space.
My head has been a battleground of mixed impulses:
The trap of silence: I’ve been trying to do no contact to give her space to manage her crisis and for me to work on my mental health, but honestly, I kept slipping into treating it like a strategic game—waiting for her to miss me, tracking the silence, and letting every digital indicator (like the fact that she hasn't blocked me) keep me hooked on false hope.
The realization: I've had to brutally face the fact that using silence or self-improvement as a "tactic" to manipulate someone else's reaction is just a recipe for disaster. If I tie my healing to her response, I'm completely handing over my peace of mind.
The real work: I'm trying to redirect that energy inward. I'm staying sober, pushing hard in the gym (weight training and conditioning), and trying to become a genuinely stable, grounded man—not as a performance to win her back, but because I refuse to be controlled by my own panic anymore.
It hurts like *** because I still love her deeply, and letting go of such a deep connection feels unnatural. But I'm learning that if I'm going to respect her space while she navigates her personal crisis, I have to let go of the timeline, stop keeping score, and anchor myself.
Just needed to put that out there and vent to people who get what it's like to fight your own head while trying to hold onto a broken heart.

I cannot say if this will happen, but if you work on you and becoming the best version of yourself, for yourself, then if she ever does, you'll be ready and if not , you won't make the same mistakes again 💛

The self realization you had is encouraging and so very hard to maintain, the struggle is real. Thank you for your honesty and share.
