break up after 6 years
my long distance bf of 6 years broke up with me this week. everything was great in our relationship but with my upcoming graduation he was contemplating our future. he’s extremely stuck in never leaving where he lives and says that if we stay together he would limit my career path. however I wanted to compromise with him in any way but he felt so pressured. He told me maybe in the future we could get back together but he didn’t know. I’m not sure what to do. I’m trying to give him space. I want us to be together again. I don’t know how to help him feel less scared about moving away. any advice?

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Losing someone you love, especially after six years, is heartbreaking. It’s even harder when the breakup isn’t because of a lack of love but because of fear, uncertainty, and life circumstances. I can feel how much you care about him, how much you’re willing to compromise, and how deeply you want to make things work. That kind of love is rare, and I know it’s painful to have it slip away like this.
Right now, I think the hardest but most important thing you can do is truly give him space. Not in the hopes that he’ll come back right away, but because he needs to figure out what he truly wants, and you deserve clarity too. You shouldn’t have to convince someone to choose you. Love should be about building a future together, not just one person trying to pull the other along.
I know you want to help him feel less scared, but the truth is, that’s something he has to work through on his own. You’ve already shown him that you’re willing to meet him halfway, and it’s up to him to decide if he’s ready to do the same. The best thing you can do right now is focus on yourself your graduation, your dreams, your happiness. If he truly loves you and sees a future with you, he’ll find his way back. And if he doesn’t, I promise you, someone else will see you, choose you, and never make you feel like your love is a burden.
I know it hurts right now, and I wish I could take that pain away. But please remember that you are worthy of a love that doesn’t make you question where you stand. You deserve someone who chooses you fully, without hesitation. And no matter what happens with him, your future is still bright, and you are still enough.
