5 years, stuck in the same place.
My boyfriend and I live with his dad. The plan was for him &I to stay here and save for our own apartment. As time goes on I started to notice that he really hasn’t been saving any money ,he’s actually been blowing his money kind of recklessly. I’ve been saving and each time I always help him with money when he needs it. This time I helped him out with a larger amount of money. Which I took from my savings for our place. He promised to pay me back. But now I am noticing that he is up on money and he has not made one effort to pay me back. I feel like it’s the principle of at least attempting. We only speak about it when I bring it up. My other issue is that I feel like we are still in the same spot. No improvement. Since I moved in the goal was to move. But we’re still here and I’m not sure how much longer I can be here with his lack of effort. It’s very upsetting especially when I see him blow money and it makes me think that maybe we don’t want the same things. Or maybe he’s too comfortable here with his dad. I’m not sure but I’m not feeling too great about it.
Some people just aren't good with money or saving. If he's never moved out of his parents house motivation is probably quite low. You could go on a trip, stay in a cottage or something and then bring up the chat about how it would be nice to have space like that all the time. Then get him to make a plan, I always think setting up something automatic to take X amount on payday is the best move, it removes the self control or the thinking. All you have to do is not look at the savings account / not touch it.
