Advice on breakup
Me and my boyfriend have been together for 5 years. We realised very early that we are not compatible and have different opinions on literally everything. We had a lot of fights and stress because of those things, but we loved each other so much so we wanted to work and continue the relationship no matter what. We were never low on efforts, we gave our 100% because whenever we came to the point of breaking up, we couldnt do it because we were so much invested, emotionally, mentally and physically, so the last resort was to continue the relationship no matter what. My family kept advising me that you guys are not compatible together you wont be much happy and satisfied though they never forced me and I also didnt acted on their advice. But now I've really been getting second thoughts like I dont want this pattern to continue throughout my life, I want a relationship where I am at ease, where someone agrees with me , where I am not arguing literally everytime we meet and cause me stress. Whenever I share this with my boyfriend he says that I know we are different but it is worth fighting for , we can do it and it seems that maybe this clash of opinions and matters does not bother him that much or stresses him that much as it does to me. I broke up with him again , did it like 2 months ago too and came back with him because I was feeling so much bad and he was in much more pain so I thought lets give it another try, but the point is these thing happened again and I literally feel so stressed and dissatisfied in the relationship , I am confused like is it even necessary to entail all this. Why not explore and find someone else who is not exactly like me , but a little bit more like me , with whom the relationship feels a little less easier. Coming back with my boyfriend at this time would be the most easiest thing to do , because right now I am alone, I miss him , I feel super emotional and I definitely know he would be hurting more than me , but what's the point if I will again find myself on the same spot after some time because I know differences will come up again and I will get caught in cave of stress again. This is my first relationship , my fmily members always say that that you didnt explore much and maybe could have found a better co0mpatible partner for you , I didnt pay that much attention to them before, but now I think maybe they were right, maybe If I find someone else more compatible to me , maybe there is someone out there. But what if there is not , what if I dont find anyone better than him, will I be stuck in a cycle of misery ? Than I think am I really an unhappy person and become stressed in situations where people would'nt get stressed that much and compromise easily to work things out, I am confused.
Sorry for such a long ramble.
Astro,
I'm in a very similar situation. Been with my now fiance for almost 6 years. We disagree on almost everything, like for example, one of the big things that has really had me questioning our relationship lately is that he refuses to go to my brothers wedding because it is a gay wedding. He cites his religious beliefs as the reason for not attending, and I am not religious in the slightest.
There are numerous other things we disagree on. We engaged in November of 2020 and haven't married yet due to COVID. But for the past 6 months I've REALLY started to have doubts about whether he is someone I can see spending the rest of my life with.
I'm conflicted like you. He doesn't think our differences matter that much and we can overcome any of them like we have before. But as I get older I wonder what it will look like to raise children with him, to have a family, own a home together etc. It seems like our differences bother me more than him and while I've expressed my concerns and recently my unhappiness in the relationship I don't feel like I'm being heard.
I'm sorry you're having to go through this. It's hard to be in such a long relationship with someone and feel like you should give up but you also at the same time don't want to give up because you do love this person despite all the differences.
