Long Distance Issues
My long distance girlfriend of three years used to call all the time with me. She recently moved to the other side of the country and has been very busy lately. I've struggled with alcoholism and relapsed when she moved. I've been way too clingy to her partly because she helped me when I got sober the first time and from all of the calls we had before. I let her mom know about it because I knew my behavior was toxic and I wasn't surprised when my girlfriend told me her mom was mad at me. I let her mom know because it didn't feel right for me to have her believe I was the perfect boyfriend she had let her mom know I was. Was this a step in the right direction to becoming healthy for us or did I needlessly destroy her family's trust?
I wouldn’t say you destroyed the family’s trust. I definitely think you should’ve talked to her about talking to her mom instead of just going straight to her mom. You should probably start by letting her know you’re sorry about that. If you are. Then I would take time to work on the Alcoholism. You need to conquer that on your own. That will make this relationship or anyone after it so much better.
I did let my partner know I was going to text and I was aware of what her mom's reaction would be. I told her that because I knew my behavior was toxic and since she felt trapped I wanted to show her that I was ready to change for her and that started with admitting I have a problem. As a part of my promise to get better for myself and us I told her I would seek help for my problems somewhere else other than just on her.
