Overthinking things?

I'm feeling a bit annoyed with myself. Please bear with me, having been on my own for the last 3 and a half years, I'm struggling to understand whether I'm misreading or overthinking things.

I'm a single mum to my two teen lads, I care for and home school my youngest who has learning difficulties, and work 2 days a week. I'm reasonably happy on my own, sometimes I think it would be nice to be in a relationship, but for the majority of the time I don't want to be if that makes any sense? I'm happy in my in company, although I do like the company of others.

I received a message from a guy I dated over 7 years ago (just the one date), he's a nice guy and he lives nearby and said he'd spotted me out and about and thought he'd ping me a message to see how I am. We chatted over text during the evening and I mentioned I go out for walks around our estate a lot which is probably why he's seen me a fair bit especially now the warmer months are here.

He asked if he might join me on one of my walks, I said he was welcome to, he said when he was free and we arranged a day to catch up for a stroll.

We met up this evening, and went for a nice long walk, we chatted, he more than I, but it was nice to catch up and felt relaxed, a bit like catching up with an old mate. Dating and relationships came up in our conversation, I said how long I'd been single, that I've not dated at all, and how I enjoy my own company and space, but I also enjoy the company of others, but I don't feel the need for a relationship. He mentioned that he feels put off dating women because he hasn't had much luck with relationships in the last 3 years.

As our walk came to an end, he said how much he'd enjoyed it, and I said that I had enjoyed it too. He started to say 'I would be nice to..', and I kind of spoke at the same time/finished the sentence saying 'it would be nice to do it again sometime'. To which he replied, 'yes, how about a cup of tea outside on my patio next time, I've got three different coloured tea pots to choose from'. I laughed and said that sounded nice, then asked him what days he's usually free, he said it varies due to work so it would be easier to ping him a text when I'm free and we can sort something out.

We then parted, he went to take my hand, but I held my arms out and said, 'give us hug' and hugged him.. he hugged me back quite tightly (I'm a hugs kinda gal). I headed home and he pinged a message a bit later to say, 'thank you, really enjoyed that' (the walk), and I replied, 'Me too, it was lovely to see you'.

I'm sat here now feeling confused and unsure of how I came across having jumped in with the 'it'll be nice to do it again sometime' and the hug? I felt I rushed right in with it. It would be nice to catch up again I did enjoy his company, but that's all, I enjoyed the company, so I can't work out why I'm getting so worked up about how I came across?

Sorry I appreciate it probably all sounds really silly, but I just needed to write it somewhere. Thanks for reading (listening) x

I tend to overthink things like that myself and the best thing I can offer (having been in that situation where the guy is in) is to enjoy that company. Just always be direct and forward about any intentions. Two people can enjoy each other's company without the overture of an "impending relationship". He could be doing exactly the same over thinking you are. The only thing I know is that no matter what, take it just a single day at a time and do not worry about having "rushed" to hug him / accepting to do the walk another time. As long as both of you like the company, enjoy the moment.

Thank you.. I hadn't thought to consider it that way, or that he might be overthinking things too. I always get a bit flustered/anxious in the company of others, then tend to end up overanalysing the situation after its happened, wondering whether I said or did the right or wrong thing.

You are very thoughtful and that is wonderful quality. What you did is lead with your heart and whether you feel anxious or flustered, I have always believed that the heart has its own understanding and opens us all up to things our minds cannot comprehend.
