Supporting a partner during a depressive episode

Hello there!

This is my first post and I'm looking for some advice and support. Me and my partner have been together for 3.5 beautiful years. We've never had issues communicating and everything has been blissful up until last week. He shut down and when I asked him about it, he said is due to internal pressure about work. I asked for more information and he said he is just stressed. I asked him if he needs me to do something for him or if he needs space from me and he said no to both. He's just numb. He works and sleeps and still feels exhausted. It's like he lost interest in everything. Nothing excites him or gets him pumped up.

He switched jobs a couple of months ago because he wanted to further his career. From a software developer, he now works for a different tech company in people management. He still does some coding, but not nearly as much as he used to and he loved coding. I asked him today if he thinks he made the right choice and if this new job is what he wanted and expected it to be and he said yes. Yet, he's still very...numb.

In the past, when things about me bothered him, he had no issues expressing them to me and we talked it through without problems. So, if this was in regards to something I did to cause it, I know he would tell me.

I'm finding it hard to cope with this distance. I'm being as patient as I can and as supportiv as I can, but I'm worried about him and I just don't know how to deal with my own anxiety while being there for him. Does anyone have any experience with this?

There is not a lot you can do other than be there and let him know that it's ok to be himself and show emotions around you, make sure he knows how much you care. Be patient with him, recovering from depression takes time. Try and slowly ease him back into things one step at a time otherwise it will feel overwhelming for him. You may want to see a medical professional about possibly getting him antidepressants.
