The 1000 Dollar Expected Loss Rule (True Story)
Hello i am Peter and i am 7 Cups verified listener and member of 7 Cups since 2015 Today i am gonna share with you a story from my memory and lesson, in a hope that it makes a difference, the way it did to me. I vividly remember that day, the day my grandfather passed away, my father sat me down and told me the news and handed me a letter telling me that my grandfather left it to me: So after i cried my eyes out that night i decided to open it, and it’s content i believe made me the man i am today The letter content: “Son, listen to me carefully, this is the last lesson i want to divulge to you. I am gonna teach you (The 1000 Dolllar Expected Loss Rule). Now, if you invest a 1000 USD and lost it immediately the next day, you will be very devastated. In comparison if you lost the same investment with the mindset that before you placed that investment, you knew there is high chance that you will lose it all, in that situation only your loss will be tolerated by your mind. Because your mind will always fear the unknown. You see Son, our mind derive emotions based on our expectation, hence if you expected a high return on that 1000 Dollar and lost it or received less than what you expected, you will be very devastated and disappointed. Same goes for relationships and life downturn conundrums. When you invest in a relationship or a goal you should always put various scenarios and different expectations both good and bad Only by then your mind will learn to tolerate pain ,because you notified your brain about the unknown. And that’s what being an adult mean, weighting risk and return. If you got this then you got relationships, investment and life. Sincerely, Your beloved grandfather, i love you son” RIP Grandpa
Thank you for sharing this story with us Peter and condolences to your grandfather![]()
