I’ve been hearing things about how you’re supposed to be mean to a guy or treat them bad for them to stay. My mom said my dad was the same way. And now I’m scared that I’m too nice to my boyfriend and he’ll just try to take advantage of me or cheat on me.

argh, unfortunately, people have to resort to things like that to say nowadays. the reason why is because a lot of nice people get walked over. actually, no, let me rephrase that. weak-willed people pleasers often get walked over. people pleasers are those types of people who, in a nutshell, are unable to say "no" to others. they always put the needs of others before them and are often labelled nice. when in reality, they're more or less doing that out of survival instinct & fearful of upsetting other people.
anyway, you don't need to change yourself. often times people think that it would be better if they change their behaviour, specially towards people they love so that the relationship stays but rather, this has the complete opposite effect.
if your partner wanted to take advantage of you, they would do so regardless of your behaviour, so please, don't try to change any of your characterists, those are the very things they fell in love with.
just because most people are like that, doesn't mean you have to be.
