Friendship confusions
I have an issue with a coworker I need to get off my chest:
She went through a bad breakup over the Fall and had a hard time dealing with it. We met not long after the breakup. Over time, we became friends and started texting. But one shift, we were talking and she showed me a family photo and said how glad she was to have their support. I said she was lucky to have it. In response, she said I hate you and called me the name of her ex instead of my own. For several shifts after that, shed suddenly get upset at me without warning and say stuff along the lines of I hate you and I wish I never met you." She apologized each time, but months later, Im still shaken by that treatment.
In the meantime, she said she wanted space. Weve only talked outside of work a couple times since, and its been without issue. When she said during our most recent conversation the other day that we could talk more again, I told her I wasnt comfortable doing that again yet because I was still working on moving past the way she treated me in the past. When she asked for details, I explained how it made me feel hurt, why that feeling made it hard to give her space, and that I didnt want that treatment to occur again. In response, she said it wasnt healthy for me to say that and that she was gonna block me. I could only say in response that I was just being honest. That seemed to work, because two days later, she hasn't done that yet (I assume it was just said in the heat of the moment).
Thanks to COVID-19, our job wont open for at least another month, so it'll be at least that long before I see her in person. But now that shes aware of how she made me feel by her past treatment, where do I go from here? I dont want her to feel pressured to talk to me about this until shes ready. I also dont want her to think I resent her for that treatment, but I also don't want things to be awkward at work because of this either.
