Friends with my ex
My ex reached out 2 years after we broke up and I was happy to be friends since we were before. But he keeps pushing to get back together and every time I say no he gets depressed and talks about how he hates himself and his life sucks. I love having him in my life but between his alcohol and drug abuse and lack of respect for my boundaries it's emotionally draining to be friends. I feel like he might be manipulating me emotionally but not on purpose? Our relationship has always been somewhat toxic but I don't want to tell him I can't be friends and him fall down a darker path.

Sounds like you still feel responsible for the way he feels to a certain extend. I am wondering how you are coping with that given that you are no longer in a relationship and feeling that you might be being manipulated?
