I'm extreamly moody all the time and my outgoing and spunky boyfriend insists that i'm bipolar. I'm easily ticked off and it's making our relationship a bit strained. I've never really been the affectionate type, but it seems as though i cant bring myself to show my boyfriend the love he wants because i am constantly angry at either him, or someone else. IDK WHAT TO DO!!!

@justice223 To experienceBipolar Disorder is not simply about experiencing moodiness. Anyone can be moody. Young adults are frequently extremely moody due to hormonal changes that occur in the teens and twenties. It's "normal" behavior, albeit not always fun.
If you are concerned about being affected by Bipolar Disorder, or that someone close to you is, you have to take into account many other factors. The lengths of the up, down, and normal moods for someone who has BD vary greatly. But rarely are the individual moods shorter than a few days at a stretch. There is a rapid-cycling form that is much faster, with moods varying wildly from hour to hour, but having that form of the disease is really obvious in its severity. You're not going to mistake it for "simple" moodiness.

Anxiety, depression, racing thoughts, difficuty keeping relationships/jobs/schooling intact, self-medicating, and so many other facets are part and parcel of many BD patients' lives. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

If your concern here is that you fit some of the criteria for having Bipolar Disorder, then the only way you can explore that is to speak with a medical professional to work on a possible diagnosis. Self-diagnosing or accepting a layperson's opinions are generally extremely unhelpful, and potentially downright hurtful.
If, on the other hand, your concern is that you dislike hearing your boyfriend refer to you as Bipolar, that may be more of a communication issue in your relationship.

Bottom line, he may or may not be right. Because I am not a psychiatric professional, I can't tell you that. But if you need support in exploring the possibilities of having Bipolar, or your potential communication problems with your boyfriend, Cups is a great place to do those things.

Good luck in your journey!

ps-- Don't forget to check out the BD support forum. There'a lot of great general information there.

Unless he is a liscenced psychologist and you're in a session seeking help from him, he can't insist on 'diagnosing' you as 'bipolar'. Bipolar disorder is not just a label we can slap on people who are acting 'moody' and he should learn that. If he insists you are something and it's making you feel bad and the relatoinship is strained, maybe you can consider having a serious and calm talk about it. Do you feel like he tries to actually figure out the problem or work with you about things, instead of just basically calling you crazy and leaving it at that?

If you really feel like you are having problems with your anger or your mood, consider seeing a professional to talk it through and to really understand what's going on with you. If it comes down to that and you are struggling with something, your boyfriend would do well to be supportive and proactive and not just name-call. If not, it may be time to consider whether the strain is really worth it.
