Mom wants me to study Engineering and I don't like it. Help!

Hi Marga,

Writing to tourism, mmmmm. Thinking about it, much about tourism will be useful to know as a writer. What interests people, marketing, different cultures, lots there that I can see is great for a writer's material and inspiration.

Writing to engineering, not so much! My suggestion would be to engage your parents in a discussion about what would most help you as a writer, and would allow you to cross-fertilise, if you know what I mean.

They want a career for you that will give you some security. Most writers write for love and pocket money, so they have a point.i would think that apart from tourism, journalism, history, English literature, might all be useful, but you will have wasted a year if you switch .

I think you need to write and get published. The more the better. Turn your assignments into publishable articles, even if it's for specialist blogs and magazines.

Forget the great novel for the moment.

@marga1995 Personally I'm very much of the" study what you love and not what your parents think will work for you" train of thought. If you don't like it, you'll just resent it.

There is merit to her line of thinking, believing it's "better" or a safer/more stable area of study, but it's really up to you.

I wish I knew 7 cups already when I was at this point in life because right now I'm regretting fullheartedly that I chose my mom's decision of my course to the point that I'm damaging my health. It's too late for me now but it's not too late for you, you just have to be really brave to tell people what will really make you happy. For what it's worth, writing is what I really wanted to.
