Communication and trust are the main importantbaspects of a relationship. even if you love a person if you don't trust him/her survival of the relationship would be hard. also it should be give and take from both sides with equal commitment. one should not feel that he/she is the one that is giving while the other receives. there should be understanding too. because every individual is different and their preference of a relationship is different. accepting this fact and understanding would help too.

Well said, I think this is where love languages and basic needs come into play. Relationships are difficult, even with people you really, really like.

Patience, compassion, and work. Ultimately I think if 2 people are committed to both themselves and each other it can work. Its important to know if you need a little proffessional help. My wife and I have have been through some counseling even though we have been together less than a year. And it was just to prepare for tough times when they come. I wish our society values and promoted marriage preparation more.

Communication, respect, seeing things from your partner's point of view. Honesty & trust as well & always making the decision to love them through the sunshine & the storms.

I often ask myself "do I want to be right or do I want to be happy?" It happens in a relationship ship when you have a disagreement or a difference of opinion. How important is it that you "win" the arguement? Often it will end with conceding defeat or not wanting to fight anymore. Agree to disagree doesn't mean you were necessarily happy or satisfied with the outcome. At the risk of sounding repetitive- communication is key, compromise and co-decision making are also very important.

I think agreeing to disagree is a great way to keep respectful peace while avoiding right-fighting. Well said!

As many others have said, there are some pretty basic things that are common to healthy relationships.

Respect.
Communication.
And most of all love .. because otherwise why would we be here? But it can't stand on its own.

@firecrackerktm

Certainly.. "Love isn't all we need. Love is all there is."

I think when we love someone in a healthy way many of these things fall into place, while others require dedication and hard work. It is difficult to share our space with other human beings, even the ones we really really like. I think it takes a great deal of effort and mindfulness to be intentional about the support you give your relationships.

heart and only heart.

Urdu poet Hasarat Mohani said I quote

"For the sake of the pain of heart, human was created. otherwise there's no limits for creation that bows to mighty God."

I am a huge fan of John and Julie Gottman and their work with couples. These are my three favorite tips on maintaining healthy relationships from them: express interest (know your partner's world), be gentle in conflict (use I statements, avoid blame, accept influence), and repair negative interactions. And, truly, all three of these tips boil down to open and honest communication.
