I don’t know how to make friends

I really struggle with talking to people at school, I just don’t know how to approach people and I’m always at a loss for words. I only have 1 friend right now but we don’t get to see each other much because of school. I don’t know what to do, I try to talk to people but I feel like everyone thinks I’m awkward and i also feel like I can’t relate to people all the time. It’s just lonely watching everyone have so many people to talk to and I don’t, I don’t know if there’s something wrong with me. I don’t know what to do.

Hello Lavender,

Friendship is a topic that maybe difficult. I am happy that you came here to ask for help, 7 cups is a great place to practice friendly conversations. You can tell a listener that you have problems doing friends and want to practice friendly conversations. The listener can also give you feedback on what parts of the conversations were OK, and what ones were strange or not so appropiate so you can improve from that.

Bad news are that Friendship is more difficult than that for some people, it may be your case or not. It is said that we are all different and that diversity is good but the reallity is that people who are way too different to the group may have more problems or lack of confidence. For example: People whose skin colour is different to the group skin colour, whose culture is diffrent, whose economical means are differnt, whose weigth is different, whose country is different, deaf and blind people... burned or having disabillities... and so on.

And then there are people who have even more difficult to make friends or to gather well in groups, they may seem completely normal but they have differences in their brain. They may lack the hability to read others emotions, may have problems understanding group dinamics, unwritten laws of human behavour.... like people on the autistic spectrum does. Almost all mental conditions imply invissible problems to make friends. Neurodiverse people often find easier making friends with other people who have experienced difficulties in life and thus may be more understanding of their special needs.

So appart from practice, It may be a good idea to check with a proffessional which is the exact root cause of the difficulty you experience and understand it. Good news is that whatever the reason is, you are not alone.

Hugs =)
