- Ramadan is the holiest month in Islam, observed by Muslims worldwide as a period of fasting, prayer, and deep spiritual reflection. From dawn until sunset, believers abstain from food and drink to practice self-discipline and strengthen their connection with God. It is a time centered on gratitude, charity, and community, concluding with the festive celebration of Eid al-Fitr.: "شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِي أُنزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ هُدًى لِّلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَاتٍ مِّنَ الْهُدَىٰ وَالْفُرْقَانِ ۚ فَمَن شَهِدَ مِنكُمُ الشَّهْرَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ ۖ وَمَن كَانَ مَرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ ۗ يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ بِكُمُ الْيُسْرَ وَلَا يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ الْعُسْرَ وَلِتُكْمِلُوا الْعِدَّةَ وَلِتُكَبِّرُوا اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ مَا هَدَاكُمْ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:185)
Surah Al-Baqarah (2:185) establishes Ramadan as the month of the Quran’s revelation, serving as a divine guide for humanity. The verse mandates fasting for those present and healthy, while compassionately allowing those who are sick or traveling to make up their missed days later. Ultimately, it emphasizes that Allah intends ease rather than hardship for believers, encouraging them to complete the fast as a way to glorify Him and express gratitude for His guidance.
- Starting from February 18 or 19 depending on the country ,this month requires fasting from dawn to sunset while providing exemptions for the sick or travelers to ensure ease, not hardship. It is a period of intense spiritual growth that culminates in Laylat al-Qadr and concludes with the festive gratitude of Eid al-Fitr.
- Ramadan is the sacred ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a time of spiritual growth and the month in which the Quran was first revealed. This year, for most, the month began around February 18, 2026, and is expected to conclude on March 19, 2026, with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr. Throughout these thirty days, believers observe a total fast from dawn to sunset to practice self-restraint and compassion, culminating in the holiest period, Laylat al-Qadr, when worship is believed to be more powerful than a thousand months
- ,To determine the start of Ramadan, Muftis and religious committees primarily rely on Moon Sighting (Ru’yah). According to Islamic tradition, the new month begins only when the thin crescent moon (hilal) is visible to the naked eye or through telescopes after sunset on the 29th day of the previous month (Sha'ban).
How it Works?
* The 29th Day Rule: On the evening of the 29th of Sha'ban, committees gather to look for the moon.
* The Result: * If the moon is sighted, Ramadan starts the next morning.
* If it is not sighted (due to clouds or the moon's position), Sha'ban is completed as 30 days, and Ramadan starts the day after.
* Methods: While many countries still prioritize physical sightings, some use Astronomical Calculations (Hisab) to predict visibility in advance, or a "Global Sighting" rule where if one country sees it, others follow.
This year, the start of Ramadan was split between two days because the moon was visible in some regions but not others on the evening of February 17.
- This year, Ramadan began on Wednesday, February 18, in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Palestine, Lebanon, and Iraq. However, other countries started a day later on Thursday, February 19, including Egypt, Tunisia, Jordan, Oman, Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, and Pakistan.
