Suicidal with no support.
[Edited by Forum Moderator for sharing Member details]We've had difficulty being online at the same time so we can talk and I've referred her to additional listeners and websites and hotlines. There's only so much I can do as an online chat listener. I welcome any advice.
This is a terribly difficult situation. I'm glad you're doing the best you can to support her in this difficult time, but you're right that there's only so much you can do as a listener.
Coping with grief, bulling, isolation and probably a multitude of other stresses on her own now ? has she considered seeing a therapist? Minimally, how about a grief counselor? In cases where resources are limited, I've helped search for low-cost or free options.
For starters, here'sa spreadsheet of resources, by country, in case you see something new on there she could try.
Is this member in the U.S.? If so, I've heard very mixed reviews for suicide hotlines, but I've had better results with the chat on the right side of this site:https://www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/? it is just like chatting here, but the listeners there have suicide prevention training and can refer to local resources, so she might feel more comfortable there and have the option to accesssome of the in-person support she needs.
If I think of anything else, I'll come back and add it. Kudos to you for doing all you can tobrainstorm for the well-being of this member. It's no easy task. Take care.
One more thing. If the person keeps saying that they want to commit suicide and are starting to think seriously about it do you think it is a good idea to suggest that they go totheirlocal hospital? I can't think of any other free services that are sure to be around to help intervene.
I think it's a great idea to send them to a hospital. They may not be able to get themselves there safely. If they would call someone to take them would be better. It can feel like a scary thing going to the hospital, but sometimes it is a step to the right medication to help with the depression. It's how I eventually got the help I needed.
hi there, it sounds like you've had your hands full with this member and it sounds like mostly stressful interactions. yes, please recommend they go to their nearest hospital if they feel like ending their life. also give them the suicide hotline numbers for whatever country their in. finally, we're not really supposed to be chatting with members who are suicidal because we are not trained in crisis intervention. here's a forum thread on this topic: https://www.7cups.com/forum/ListenersOnlyForums_38/TipsampHelpfulHintsforListening_61/WhyWeShouldReferSuicidalPeople_4324/
I know it may seem cold and cruel to turn away someone who is suicidal but it's really the kindest thing you can do because we are not trained to chat with users who are suicidal so the kindest thing we can do is refer them to people who are trained.
This iswhat I've been doing. I explained to her that there is only so much that I can do as a chat listener.I just want to make sure she has all of the resources possible. I do send her a message every few days to follow up to see if she has been able to meet with anyone else and recommend moreresources. I add a little encouragement as well. We've actually only had onechat session where we were both online at the same time.
