Is there such thing as 7 cups etiquette?
Is it ok for me to connect with someone and just ramble about my problems and what's bugging me? I have a very hard time opening up to people in real life. I always feel guilty for talking about my problems and putting other people in a position where they feel like they have to deal with them. I'm hoping this website can become my outlet. So is it expected that I follow a polite conversation? Do I tell them what's on my mind at the moment in a few sentences here and there? Or can I ramble on about my life story in one long message? I feel awkward saying "Hi, you don't know me but here's a few paragraphs worthof things that are bothering me right now." Listeners I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
You can do whatever works for you. A typical chat generally starts with the listener's greeting, and then they'll ask how you're doing or what brought you to 7 Cups. You can answer with as much or as little information as you want, and the chat can progress from there. It's okay to feel nervous, anxious, or uncertain. Many people do. If it helps ease your nerves, you can start off talking about lighter things -- the weather, this funny video you watched, the music you're listening to -- just to feel more comfortable. You can also jump straight into what's bothering you, in one big message or several smaller ones, all in one go or gradually as you respond to the listener. I've spoken with people who have spanned the spectrum when it comes to opening up, and no method is better than any other.
Just remember that we are here to support you as best we can. You are in control of the chat. You can decline to answer any question, change the topic at any point, and give feedback to let the listener know how they can make the chat a better experience for you. Giving such feedback can feel awkward, so it's okay if you'd rather save it for the anonymous review.
Different listeners also have different listening styles, so it may take a couple chats with different listeners to find one who fits well with you. Looking through Browse Listeners or the support forums can help with that. 7 Cups is all about you.
