Psychotic depression / psychosis?
Hi I've been diagnosed with bipolar and psychotic depression as a symptom, I'm still in shock, is there a difference between this and psychosis?
When Bipolar I becomes very severe, psychosis can ensue, psychosis being the manifestation of hallucinations and delusions and thought disorder. It occurs in BPD at a period after heightened (euphoric; manic) mood or lowered mood (depression). Psychosis is a symptom present in a couple different disorders, namely schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, but also occasionally bipolar and unipolar depression.
I hope you are getting proper treatment! I wish you the best of luck.
Thank you, so psychotic depression is not psychosis? I have been given medication and some treatment options.
Psychotic depression is symptoms of depression that co-occur with symptoms of psychosis. Think of psychosis simply as a symptom, part of a number of different illnesses. BTW psychotic depression is sometimes confused for schizoaffective disorder, and vice versa.
