What would you want in a therapist office?
If you were to go to therapy, what kinds of things in the room would help you to be relaxed?
Or, if you have gone/are going, what kinds of things do you find helpful?
For example, my therapist always had stuffed toys and colouring books :)
@TaranWanderer
Well, personally I would love a welcoming environment, with couches and a nice rug (in case anyone feels like sitting on the floor). I would also love soft toys (as you've mentioned) and maybe fidget toys to keep hands busy!
@TaranWanderer This is just me of course but blankets for you sure not sure why but it is not just for if you are cold rather there is something nice about being covered in blanket. Sometimes we draw things that I do not have the words for, so big bits of paper and pencils. I am not sure what the right words are for this but lots of little interesting things, like my psychologists has little stones she has collect so we can talk about where they came from, sometimes for real other times I can make up a story. Other things like things she got from visiting places even if it is not where did you get them for but I can hold them and feel them. Then she asks what I can see and feel, kind of like ground. I take my own teddy in but maybe people who forgot or do not have any they could borrow on that is already there. Kind of the last thing not sure but mine she has different smells like a candy candy smell or bubblegum. Always different and she has so many that if I need to I can open the lids and just smell them.
Also I know people have allergies or do not like them but puppies or kitties :) but that might be to much.
@AmalieAnne I would love to be able to have cats/dogs around!! But allergies do get tricky. I like the idea of having new things to feel and make up stories for. The smells thing is a good idea too! Scents can be super helpful and calming sometimes
@TaranWanderer Cat and dog teddies instead? Then you could adopt one
smells really help me I have Candy Cane, Hazelnut and Toasted Marshmallow and they help with the grounding thing or just when I feel scared.
@AmalieAnne
Blankets would be lovely! I've heard of weighted blankets being used in therapy, often to provide comfort and the feeling of a warm hug, and I think that would be a great idea! Soft toys too would be amazing. My school counsellor has a couple of soft toys with faces on them, almost like emojis, and they help us express our feelings when we do not have words for them. Being able to ground yourself on items is also a really good idea, and I may suggest it to the counsellor! Also, something I thought of whilst reading your posts is that food would be nice, just so you could have a snack, especially if you have been feeling too sad to eat.
