Can marriage sometimes damage self esteem?

It has been 5 years, I am married to someone. I am a mother of 2 years old. My husband has a habit of ridiculing me, calling me mad or sick. Earlier, I didn't pay much attention , but now it seems these words have started to hurt me causing a serious damage in me. 'Hurt' would be a small word to use. Is it okay in marriage? Should I just ignore and keep going? BTW, I am well educated holding a degree in engineering and radical and rational. I understand these are just words but I don't know why they keep on crushing me from inside

Words have the power to hurt!

Marriage is about respect, honesty, and love, and if you are hurt by these words, have an open conversation, putting your boundaries in place. You have the right to be heard and validated 💕💜

I can hear how deeply painful this has become for you. Being repeatedly ridiculed or called “mad” or “sick” by a partner isn’t something small—it chips away at your sense of worth and safety over time, which is why you feel crushed inside even if you “know” they’re just words. Words in a marriage matter, because marriage is supposed to be a place of respect, care, and partnership.
