2) How many people attempt to get better?
@Butterflycat
5%
@Butterflycat 25% i'd say. You mentioned "attempt to" and I think many do attempt, sometimes multiple times, but it's not easy doing it on their own.
@Butterflycat for #2, I'll just be optimistic and say 90%
@Butterflycat 200,000 million people report that they self harm a year
3) What country is the highest rate for self harm?
@Butterflycat
The UK
@Butterflycat UK for Europe...not sure about entire world though, maybe USA?
@Butterflycat UK is correct :)
4) When do people start self harming?
@Butterflycat
Not always a reason. Just emotions
@EnergySensitive
Any age
@Butterflycat It's often started in the teens or early 20s (but really can start at any age), and usually when they're going through a difficult time?
@Butterflycat mid teens. Bullying has reached its peak and there
@Butterflycat 14-20 years old is the time people start to self harm
5) What percentage of people self harm due to sexual abuse?
@Butterflycat 20-30%? I'm not sure. I heard once about the correlation and how it's often.. but don't remember any stastics numbers
@Butterflycat I think it's like ~50%?
@Butterflycat probably about in line with the % of people in the given demographic that suffer it.
@Butterflycat I know quite a few people who have been sexually abused in some way, all of different age. They have all either attempted or succeeded in self harm of some kind. I would say around 35%
@Butterflycat 50%
6) What disorders are sometimes associated with self harm?
@Butterflycat
Any and all
@Butterflycat
The ones most people talk about and that I've read online about are bipolar and anxiety from memory... and bipolar is the only one the DSM-V lists self-harm under as a possible consequence of having that disorder. I really hope that will change one day. But any disorder can result in someone self-harming, or no disorder at all. Self-harm just doesn't discriminate...
@rebecca947 I think you mean borderline personality disorder is the only one that lists self-harm in the DSM-V :) But I'm sure that bipolar has that association too! I hope things can change one day too
@TaranWanderer
Oops!! Thank you for that correction! :p yeah, hopefully... we just need more awareness and debunking stigma and myths... most important in my opinion!
@Butterflycat I know self-harm is usually associated to bpd as symptom, and there is a correlation between eating disorders and self-harm. If you mean "more common" to happen together, I'd say those two plus depression/mood disorders. but it can happen to any, as was said
@Butterflycat I agree with what others have said: Mostly BPD, but also affect disorders (depression, anxiety, etc), EDs...I think those are the most commonly associated ones even though it can happen to anyone
@Butterflycat All correct :)
@Butterflycat
(Are we meant to answer here??? If not, where?? Hehe sorry!!)
@rebecca947 Yeah answer here. I'll post answers tomorrow :)
@Butterflycat
Hmm question 1, not too sure! There's heaps of people who do it in secret and never have to go to emergency or let the health sector even know... I'd say maybe 10% of the world's population that we know of?? Not sure if that's too high or low aha just a guess :p
@Butterflycat for #1, hard to say, with all un-reported cases...I know it's a lot..like even in just the US it's millions :S so probably much more than that I guess...
@Butterflycat I would say at least 40% of the worlds population self harm in some form or another, during their lifetime.
