Relapse at the lake

Hi all,

I had a relapse after 5 days without SH. I was feeling overwhelmed and had to release the pressure somehow. Actually, I was confused with my time to meet my counselor online and missed my appointment. I started blaming myself, felt stupid, which led me to go back to the lake. The lake is is where I have been going for last six years to SH.  After it was over, I felt drained, did not like myself, and ashamed. I am finally sharing this because I want to stay connected and keep trying.

@WilliamPeters

Dear Beloved,

Missing an appointment or making a mistake doesn't make anyone a failure. We should show ourselves self-compassion. A relapse doesn't erase the five days of progress. Celebrate your victories. Five days without self-harm is meaningful progress and shows that change is possible. Recovery is never straight, and setbacks are a part of the healing process.

Identify associated triggers such as shame, self-criticism, or painful emotions, and discuss them with your therapist. If a particular location is a trigger, avoid going there alone and spend time in a safer environment instead.

Create a safety plan for difficult moments, including people to call and coping strategies. Use safer coping strategies to release emotional tension, such as spending time with someone supportive, exercising, engaging in hobbies or activities, or doing anything that helps you feel better.

After a relapse, stay connected to supportive people instead of isolating yourself. Every time you choose to try again, you are taking a step toward healing.

@Eternalbliss00Thank you for taking the time to reply.

You are right that shame and self-criticism were a big part of what happened. Missing the appointment led to a lot of negative thoughts, and things escalated from there. The lake has become a difficult place for me because of the history attached to it.

I appreciate your suggestions. Right now, I am trying to stay connected to support and be honest about what happened rather than keeping it to myself.

@WilliamPeters Also today, while shaving, I noticed a strong increase in SH urges. It caught me off guard, but I think the feeling of using a razor may have been part of the trigger. I am thinking of  switching to an electric shaver.

Has anyone else found that shaving or handling razors can be triggering?
