Staying Sober
Im currently two months sober from self harm but nothing feels better. In fact I think it felt better when I was sh. I just dont know how to respond to all these things that I feel and often times they dont go away. I felt that sh was my best way of feeling better but now that I stopped it really seems like it was. I do not want to relapse nor do i want to encourage it but if there isnt any other way to make me feel better is it that bad...i know its horrible to say out loud but i really am losing options here. I need to get myself better because im losing people I love. I just need to know it staying sober is the best option for healing. And please let me know how to deal with these feelings so I can grow as a person.

I’m really glad you said this out loud. What you’re describing is very real, and it doesn’t mean you’re weak, broken, or failing at recovery. First two months sober from self-harm is a huge achievement, even if it doesn’t feel like one right now. The fact that you’re still choosing not to relapse while feeling this bad tells me how strong and self-aware you actually are. What you’re experiencing has a name, and it’s common self-harm worked for you once as a coping tool so your brain is grieving the loss of something that gave quick relief. That doesn’t mean it was healthy or that it’s the “best” option it means your nervous system hasn’t learned safer ways yet. Healing isn’t instant replacement; it’s a slow retraining. And I want to be very clear about this, gently and honestly:
Staying sober is the best option for healing even when it feels worse at first. Early recovery often feels more painful not less, because
you’re feeling emotions you used to numb
your brain hasn’t rebuilt new relief pathways
the pain is no longer being released quickly
That doesn’t mean this is how it will always feel. It means you’re in the hardest stretch.
You are not horrible for thinking “was it really that bad if it helped me?”
That thought doesn’t mean you want to relapse it means you want the pain to stop. That’s human. What matters is this part you said, and it matters a lot I do not want to relapse nor do I want to encourage it. That tells me your healing part is still here, even if it’s exhausted about the feelings that “don’t go away” You’re not failing because the feelings stay. You’re learning to sit with waves that used to be released through harm. Right now, the goal is not to make the feelings disappear it’s to survive them without hurting yourself until they pass.
Some things that can help not as quick, but safer and lasting
Name the feeling out loud or in writing “This is grief / rage / emptiness / fear.” Naming reduces intensity.
Physical regulation (because SH was physical): cold water on wrists, holding ice, paced breathing, tight blanket, grounding through the body.
Time limits: tell yourself “I don’t have to feel better forever, just for the next 10 minutes.”
Connection without explanation: sitting near someone, texting “can you distract me?” no details needed....You’re not supposed to do this alone. About losing people you love ....People don’t leave because you’re too much. They leave because pain isolates, communication breaks, and needs go unmet all things that can be repaired. Getting better isn’t about being perfect; it’s about staying alive and learning new ways to cope.
Please hear this clearly:
Relapsing might feel like relief, but it will not give you the growth, stability, or relationships you’re trying to protect. It only postpones healing and deepens the cycle you’re trying so hard to escape. I really want to ask you something important and you don’t have to answer if it feels too much
are you safe right now?
If you’re feeling close to relapsing, reaching out for immediate support is not a failure it’s an act of strength. You are not broken. You are not running out of options. You are in the middle of healing and the middle is often the darkest part.
I’m really glad you’re still here. 🌱
Thank you so much i needed to hear that. I will keep pushing to become better and heal from this. I had all the items i used to self harm taken away, not thrown away but they are out of my reach to prevent me from using them but still here to provide me comfort. I made a big promise not to relapse and I want to stick with it. I just have all these big feelings that i never truly dealt with before and needed to hear some encouraging words. Thank you. And if anything changes I will reach out <3
