[TW] My unusual form of SH
TW for vague descriptions, but still descriptions, of the form of SH that I do/did.
I don't know which greeting to use to start this, except thanking you for taking your time to read this.
Since this topic is hard, I'll try to keep it brief. I just wanted to finally get it off my chest.
I never cut myself, which is the recognizable form of SH. But since I was a child, on and off, I would nip, rip and tear off the skin from my heels. Especially if the bubble of skin shows up or a blister/callus. Sometimes it stayed on a top layer and it didn't hurt, just gave a different sensation when walking, but mostly it hurt to walk. Greatly. So little wound could cause so much pain! The worst fact was that I had to walk to/from school every day.
Of course, when I was a child, when I first started, I didn't know that those cuts were the go-to for possible infections/bacteria. That's why I'm trying so hard to stop now, after relapsing hard this summer. And because it really hindered me of doing activities as basic as walking to working out or wearing summer shoes (I prefer to wear socks to stop myself).
I have had others "smaller" forms of SH, such as picking at my nails and biting my skin (which I can proudly overcame) or picking at my scabs and leaving scars (but that's rare as well). All of those I started in early childhood, and even when my parents noticed - which was traumatizing in itself - they didn't take the right steps to help, only scaring or/and shaming me and making it worse.

Thank you for sharing. And thank you for the trigger warning. It's very kind of you to think of others.
There are many forms of self harm and I believe all are valid. Also, I believe that self harm is way more common than most people realise. There's a lot of mental self harm that many aren't aware they are doing. Awareness is the first step to change, so it's great news that you are already aware of what you are doing. Not only that, but you are admitting it by sharing about it. Acceptance is also really helpful on the path to changing something. Im so impressed with the steps you are taking. And I wish you all the best in your journey to achieving what you want.
@Clio9876 thank you so very much for your encouraging words!
Yes, it was hard for me to admit this to myself, but especially to others with how easy it was to hide. But I did it. I shared it, at least on here.
@asjafocus
Indeed you did it. And you will achieve much more. One step at a time, I have found to be an exceedingly useful motto.
