hello fellow friends in sh recovery!!

i’ve been clean for a few months and i am starting my job as a camp counselor tomorrow. i was self harming for years, but this past year i gained very visible scars which i have never had before. they’re on my thighs, so it has never been an issue of people seeing until now, where i will have to wear a swimsuit in front of a bunch of children and my coworkers. any advice? i’m nervous.

I'm happy to hear you're in recovery and it's natural to be nervous when your body is giving away a secret, you may or may not be ready to tell.

I just googlied for a makeup option, if that's the route you want as an idea? They recommended full coverage foundations, tattoo concealers or colour correctors to blend into your skin, waterproof ideally.

Or you can talk to whoever is in charge and ask their advice. At least you're moving forwards and supporting others in a hopefully fun campsite experience :)

UPDATE!! today is the first time i had to swim with my kiddos. i had them in a line when it happened, an eight year old girl goes “what are those?”

i said they were scars, and she asked from what, and i told her i didn’t remember because it happened to me when i was really young…. and that was it! they moved on to talking about their own various scars! it was not the end of the world at all and none of my coworkers said anything the whole day. :))

I can relate. this gives me hope, as I am always worried about children noticing. i dont want to worry them, or make thier parents mad about thier child being around a self harmer. although some of my scars are newer, 2 being literal scabs. so I can say they are from when I was little..
