First time actually coping
Hey everyone,
Since my relapse in May I haven't been able to cope with urges. I thought I could get back to recovery but nothing worked and I haven't been even as much as a day clean since May. But today everything changed. It's a very small step but it's something. I woke up with huge urges, I had a triggering dream (more like nightmare though) and the urges were strong. I got very close to selfharm but there was work waiting for me. I had to build an IKEA closet. I had never done that before and I wanted to prove I could do it on my own. It distracted me for a bit. During the building every time I held a screwdriver in my hand I felt the urges again but I pulled through. Now the closet is build, it's in place and I've never felt more proud of myself. The feeling of being proud is so strong that I don't have urges anymore.
Will it last? I don't know. Will I wake up with urges again? Probably. But this step is so important in the road to recovery and it will be something to guide me along the way.
I felt like sharing this and you guys are the only ones who would truly understand. ❤️❤️❤️
Big hugs from Ellen

That's very great effort by you. You gave good fight over negative thought and did constructive work.
Well done .
Hello, @IAmMeDealWithIt! A massive congratulations on both defeating the urges and building the closet on your own! Two amazing achievements! I'm so proud of you <3 *massive hug*
As for urges and distractions, it sounds like you've tried a lot of things, but there's always more to try! You've done it before your relapse in May- what worked for you before that happened? If you could beat the urges in the past, there's nothing stopping you from being able to do it again. I hope you don't give up on finding what works for you. And feel free to scroll through this subcommunity's forums to find some distraction strategies- if you'd like, I could link you the forum or posts.
Best of luck with recovery! I believe you've got this! <3
