Hi, in this video on youtube where a psychotherapist answers to people about psychological issues, i heard that self harming is related (is a symptom of) borderline personality disorder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vttn0bdC78

Do you think that above mentioned psychotherapist is right?

@klemen Yes, the American Psychiatric Association's definition of borderline personality disorder, in their manual known as DSM-5, includes self-mutilating behavior as part of Criterion 5 for borderline personality disorder. Other impulsive self-harming behavior (for example, binge eating) is included as part of Criterion 4.

DSM-5 itself is not available online, as far as I know, but if you search the Internet you can easily find the list of criteria.

Hi there @klemen,

Self-harm is indeed considered one of BPD symptoms. However, self-harm alone is not enough to receive a diagnosis of BPD. There are people who suffer from BPD who do not self-harm, and people who self-harm but do not suffer from BPD.

Here you can read more about BPD. I hope this helps
