How to tell support system about a relapse?
Hi!
I recently relapsed. I was almost 3 years clean so I’ve really been beating myself up over it. I’m also paranoid because I think I’m too numb to it and it’s getting dangerous. I’m worried it’ll get infected or something and that’s how my family will find out. My mom acts like it physically hurts her. My dad acts like I’m a genetic mistake. He’s hidden everything he thought could be dangerous before like it could help. My friends are totally fine with it because it’s in the past and Im like a success story. That’s not the point though. The point is, I have all these people that thought I was better and I’m not and I don’t know how to own it. I’m going back to therapy and they know that but they don’t know why. I was thinking of telling a friend I think will have a more neutral reaction first to ease into it and building up to a personal mentor before my parents. Im so worried that my injuries will get infected and decide for me. Any tips for treating burns? They aren’t my usual and it’s stressing me out a lot.
@PorcupineRay Hi Ray! I hope you are doing okay. I am really sorry to hear about your relapse. I want you to know that despite this, you are still in recovery. These things happen, but it doesn't negate all the progress you've made these past 3 years! I think reaching out to your loved ones for support would be good, but you can get right back on track because this is all a part of recovery. We may take a step back, but you will still move forward. No one is perfect and you will get through this. If you are experiencing burns, I would definitely seek medical attention so that you don't get an infection. Best of luck!

@PorcupineRay hi Ray I just wanted to reach out and say I also relapsed today after around 3.5 years. It sucks, but it doesn't mean we didn't work super hard the past few years to stay clean! I'm proud of you for going back to therapy and reaching out for help! Personally I don't think I'm going to tell too many friends and family, since I know the negative reactions will only make what I'm feeling worse. But if you feel as though it'll be beneficial to you it might be best to start with someone you know will be supportive, and gain that support before talking with those that might take it harder. Lots of love your way ❤️ -Lyss
