Stuck between duty and passion

In the end, your dreams and your family’s hopes don’t have to be at odds. With patience, you’ll find a way to honor both. 💛

Hello. Did you try, maybe, to make the lists of pros and cons for each of the choices (I mean a doctor vs. a writer)?

Do you think there is a way to combine both paths (but, obviously, staying sane and not overloaded at the same time 😊)?

Being a writer is a noble and prestigious thing to do. If that's your passion, that can be your mission for a life time. But more often than not that is no guarantee of a regular income, I am afraid.

Being a doctor is a noble and prestigious thing to do, too. But some parents or relatives may think of it also as the source of a certain and regular income to you.

However, you can be sued for your decisions taken as a doctor, and you cannot be sued as a writer (unless you are Salman Rushdie or copycat someone's else work).

You can still write while being a doctor, but you cannot be responsible for people's health and live being a writer with no M.D. grade. Being a writer you are responsible for human minds or emotions.

The need for health services I believe will never end. But the profession of a writer is in high danger from developing AI, possibly being an unfair competitor in the near future...

My second thought is: How about seeing being a doctor and being a writer not as opposite paths, but as things which may complement each other?

Just some examples:

Doctors on their educational path might have to write a lot. It is more like scientific, academic or professional language, but still some ways of conveying ideas might be as useful as in writing.

Also, it depends what kind of stories you would like to write. If that would be a crime mystery or a medical thriller, or a romance between two young people in a hospice, some insider's knowledge on medicine or health services could be precious.

One of the most important things you may need as a writer are personal experience and a lot of real life stories. You cannot hear a lot of people's life stories of your patients being a dentist, though 😉 

But, on the other hand, if you would like to place the action of your novel in one of foreign countries, it is good you might see it with your own eyes. And that is the point when you need a regular income...

And when you work, but are passionate at some other areas at the same time, your passion can save you from burning out as a professional...

So, the question is back: How do you think you could combine those two?

I can only imagine how hard it must be, especially after putting your heart into that novel. The fact that the publisher admired your work shows how much talent you’ve got, even if things didn’t line up this time.

I think a lot of people can relate to that feeling of being pulled in two directions. It’s totally okay to feel torn about it, and you're definitely not alone in this. Whatever happens, just know that your hard work and your passion for writing are so important, and it’s clear you’re really putting everything into both your family’s wishes and your own dreams. Take care of yourself through all of this, you’ve already come so far. I can really feel how deeply this means to you. On one side, you’re carrying your father’s dream of becoming a doctor, and on the other you have this passion for writing that’s already brought you so far you even got recognition from a publisher which is such an achievement. It sounds like you’re standing between responsibility and passion, and that must feel really tough. Whatever you choose it’s clear you’re hardworking and I truly believe that will carry you forward in whichever path you take
