I don't know what to do after my undergraduate degree
by GumballMachine

...See more Finishing my undergraduate degree soon. As a first generation student, I will be the first in my family to graduate from university. I will be wallowing in debt, and partly due to this I will not continue my education. There is LOTS of employment that can be done with only experience and no university education anyways. I think I am actually of average intelligence and it is really isolating to go to university, so I am not sure why I would continue studying. I have a poor memory and nobody is interested in me enough to give me attention. Plus, most of the students are WAY younger than me so it's like attending an upper-high school rather than a university. It's really deluded, people thinking they need to get a degree after high school to enhance employment opportunities. It used to be different in the past, but now anyone can get a degree. University as it is in the modern day just isn't the same as it used to be. University used to mean a lot to me and was exciting, but unfortunately doesn't mean anything anymore or feel the same as it used to. All going to university is is taking in information and spitting it out until you get a piece of paper that doesn't necessarily get you employment or actually mean anything. Why would I want to do that? People who take the time to get PhDs who take in so much information for years and are lucky enough to work in a university just work to spew information on young adults who will never get a PhD and possibly not even get a career in the area of study. It sounds disgusting to me. I hope to start a new life soon where I find somewhere I belong and have a social support system. I wonder where I should go and what I should do. I hope to move abroad and start a new life. I hope it is fulfilling, instead of this meaningless garbage and isolating lifestyle where nothing meaningful or interesting actually happens. Why I even started studying, I have no idea. I am tired of capitalist society where everything is done to get money, where people live to work and work to live, and hope to join a society that is less focused on capitalist ideals. I feel that I am being forced to be a slave by society for most of my life, and I would be very blessed to be supported by someone(s) and not work. This modern day, extortionately expensive lifestyle where everyone supposedly needs to work full-time just to survive is delusional. I actually don't want to be forced to try hard just to "be someone" in society or to work. I feel trapped in what society wants me to do, because I don't care about any of it, and this perspective isn't a result of a mental health condition. I just don't belong in this society. What I might love to do instead of being a capitalist slave is pay off my interest-incurring student debt, become a monk, and spend my time doing something like harvesting rice or tea in the mountains or hills of Asia, instead of pretending to be like these people I exist around when really I will never be like them. If anyone would like to share their current lifestyle or experiences after university, I would love to know. I would love to know what people's experience was like as a first generation student as well- if you were one you should share. I would love to talk about university and after-university experiences, or really anything related to my post. How do you cope with capitalist society? Looking forward to discussing with you.
Dealing with mean people

...See more Hi, I am a PhD student, my supervisors are mean, and they only care about publications. This is the end of my fifth year, and I was aiming to reach the defense, but they introduced more challenging work. They misled me sometimes, creating a lot of stress and pressure. When I say I do not know, they say it is my PhD and I should find a way. The problem is that they do not provide resources either literature or other contacts for help. How can I deal with such people? Also, I am an international student. What do you suggest, these days, I can not sleep well. Thanks

...See more Hi! I'm 24 and a bisexual girl, who's less than a semester away from graduating college. I'd prefer only fellow students answer if possible please! I love to read and selected a major that has a lot of reading. But I realized that throughout my high school years and even now in my college career, none of my professors seems to have made any books surrounding LGBTQ+ topics a part of their required reading materials. I've read plenty of books discussing other marginalized groups and their struggles (Women, racial minorities, disabled people, etc.) which I'm grateful for, but realized that LGBTQ+ books seemed oddly absent. Wondering if anyone else has/had this happen to them in their academic career or not?

Learning How To Learn
by Hope
Last post
...See more This is a forum post to teach you how to learn the most efficient and fast way, many of us students while we have been studying for years still struggle with learning some subjects or all at times but we don't really look into trying to change the way we learn, a while ago I enrolled in a free short course online that I will link at the end of the post, this post is basically a summary of that course and I thought to share it so we all can learn better! Diffused mode and Focus mode Researchers have found that we have two fundamentally different modes of thinking. These are called diffused mode and focus mode. We're familiar with focusing. It's when you concentrate intently on something you're trying to learn or to understand. But we're not so familiar with diffuse thinking. Turns out that this more relaxed thinking style is related to a set of neural resting states. Now as far as neuroscientists know right now, you're either in the focused mode or the diffuse mode of thinking. It seems you can't be in both thinking modes at the same time. When you're learning something new, especially something that's a little more difficult, your mind needs to be able to go back and forth between the two different learning modes. That's what helps you learn effectively. You might think of it as a bit analogous to building your strength by lifting weights. You would never plan to compete in a weightlifting competition by waiting until the very day before a meet and then spending that entire day working out like a fiend. I mean, it just doesn't happen that way. To gain muscular structure, you need to do a little work every day, gradually allowing your muscles to grow. Similarly, to build neuro-structure, you need to do a little work every day, gradually allowing yourself to grow a neuro-scaffold to hang your thinking on, a little bit every day and that's the trick. Read or hear this in detail by clicking on the following hyperlinked texts: Introduction to focused and diffused thinking [https://www.coursera.org/learn/learning-how-to-learn/lecture/75EsZ/introduction-to-the-focused-and-diffuse-modes] Using the focused or diffused mode [https://www.coursera.org/learn/learning-how-to-learn/lecture/GVacn/using-the-focused-and-diffuse-modes-or-a-little-dali-will-do-you] Chunk When you first look at a brand new concept it sometimes doesn't make much sense. Chunking is the mental leap that helps you unite bits of information together through meaning. The new logical whole makes the chunk easier to remember, and also makes it easier to fit the chunk into the larger picture of what you're learning. Just memorizing a fact without understanding or context doesn't help you understand what's really going on or how the concept fits together with other concepts you're learning. Forming A Chunk If you're learning to play a difficult song on the guitar, the neural representation of the song in your mind can be considered as a rather large chunk. You would first listen to the song. Maybe you'd even watch someone else playing the song especially if you were just a beginner who was learning things like, how to hold the guitar. Getting an initial sense of the pattern you want to master for yourself is similar for most subjects or skills. You often have to grasp little bits of songs that become neuro mini-chunks, which will later join together into larger chunks. For example, over several days, you might learn how to smoothly place the musical passages on a guitar, and when you've grasped those passages, you could join them together with other passages that you've learned, gradually putting everything together so you can play the song. Learning in math and science involves the same approach. When you're learning new math and science material, you're often given sample problems with worked out solutions. This is because, when you're first trying to understand how to work a problem, you have a heavy cognitive load. So it helps to start out with a work through the example. In summary, there are the following steps to forming a chunk 1) The first step on chunking is simply to focus your undivided attention on the information you want to chunk. If you had the television going on in the background, or you're looking up every few minutes to check or answer your phone or computer messages, it means you're going to have more difficulty in making a chunk, because your brain is not really focusing on chunking the new material. 2)The second step in chunking is to understand the basic idea you're trying to chunk, whether it's understanding a concept such as continental drift, seeing the connection between the basic elements of the plot for a story, grasping the economic principle of supply and demand, or comprehending the essence of a particular type of math problem Understanding is like a superglue that helps hold the underlying memory traces together. It creates broad encompassing traces that can link to other memory traces. 3)In math and science related subjects, closing the book and testing yourself on whether you, yourself, can solve the problem you think you understand, will speed up your learning at this stage. You often realize the first time you actually understand something is when you can actually do it yourself. It's the same in many disciplines, just looking at someone else's painting doesn't mean you could actually create that painting yourself 4) gaining context, so you can see not just how, but also when to use this chunk. Context means going beyond the initial problem and seeing more broadly, repeating and practising with both related and unrelated problems, so that you can see not only when to use the chunk, but when not to use it. This helps you see how your newly formed chunk fits into the bigger picture. In other words, you may have a tool in your strategy or problem-solving tool box, but if you don't know when to use that tool, it's not going to do you a lot of good. Doing a rapid two-minute picture walk through a chapter in a book before you begin studying it, glancing at pictures and section headings, can allow you to gain a sense of the big picture. So can listening to a very well organized lecture. Summary of the summary: chunks are best built with focused attention, understanding of the basic idea, and practice to help you gain mastery and a sense of the big picture context. Those are the essential steps in making a chunk and fitting that chunk into a greater conceptual overview of what you're learning. Resource: https://goo.gl/ZxwDnf [https://goo.gl/ZxwDnf]
I don't have it in me to finish this semester

...See more I've officially reached my limit. I'm on my second year of med school and this semester has been really challenging for me, I've been working two jobs because my dad had to quit his and I'm basically the only one with income in my family at the moment. I can't keep up with the workload, my physical and mental health are at rock bottom, I'm barely sleeping, I keep getting sick and having the worst migraines I've had in my life, keep missing classes (I missed a midterm last week due to my poor health). I know I don't want to quit med school but this particular school is making me want to crawl under a rock and never come out. The professors keep dismissing my pleas for help and make it everybody's business that I'm missing classes and on the verge of failing, I can't take the humiliation in front of my peers and I'm exhausted. My uni has this very old-fashioned/high school feel to it, we have assigned seats, a mandatory suit and tie dress code and we even have roll call every single day for every single class, half the classes I'm taking aren't even taught by the professors they just have us prepare presentations and I'm just sick of it. This wasn't my first choice for school and I only ended up there because it was the only one I could afford at the time. I feel like I don't have it in me to finish this semester and have even started thinking about transferring to another school but I'm thinking of withdrawing before the semester is over to avoid academic probation. I can't find the support I need at this place nor do I feel like I'm receiving the education I deserve. I can't take another week, the thought of waking up tomorrow to go to class makes me have a panic attack. I don't know if I should withdraw or stick around till the end of the semester, I'm just a mess right now.

Get Help With Your Homework|Pear Editing

...See more Hello, lovely student support community. This thread is for pear editing. You can post your essay, paragraph, or presentation if you want feedback from another person. ------------------------- Here are the rules: ◎All posts must be 7 Cups appropriate. (Papers with topics like racism, negative thoughts about discrimination, information about other users here on Cups, etc. are prohibited.) ◎Be supportive and kind. ------------------------- Writing process; 1. Choose a topic. Before you start writing, you need to decide exactly what you’ll write about and do the necessary research. What's your purpose for this paragraph or essay? Why this topic? 2. Do the research. • Searching for primary and secondary sources. • Reading the relevant texts closely (e.g., for literary analysis). • Collecting data using relevant research methods (e.g., experiments, interviews, or surveys) • (For argument paragraphs, it's also advised to read opinions from people of the opposite point of view.) 3. Planning and outlining Especially in academic writing, it’s important to use a logical structure to convey information effectively. It’s far better to plan this out in advance than to try to work out your structure once you’ve already begun writing. Click Here if you want a review for structure of essays [https://www.scribbr.com/academic-essay/essay-structure/#:~:text=The%20basics%20of%20essay%20structure.%20There%20are%20two] Structure for paragraphs [https://www.scribbr.com/research-paper/paragraph-structure/#:~:text=The%20number,%20length%20and%20order%20of%20your%20paragraphs] Structure for summarys [https://www.scribbr.com/working-with-sources/how-to-summarize/#:~:text=If%20the%20text%20is%20a%20scientific%20paper%20that] 4. Write the first draft. Once you have a clear idea of your structure, it’s time to produce a full first draft. This process can be quite non-linear. For example, it’s reasonable to begin writing with the main body of the text, saving the introduction for later once you have a clearer idea of the text you’re introducing. To give structure to your writing, use your outline as a framework. Make sure that each paragraph has a clear central focus that relates to your overall argument. 6. Get feedback from peers. Here are some common points to look at while peer editing someone's work: ▪ Grammar. ▪ Punctuation. ▪ Spelling. ▪ Overused expressions. 7. Redrafting, revising, and writing the final draft; Look at the paper critically at your first draft and find potential areas for improvement. Redrafting means substantially adding or removing content, while revising involves making changes to structure and reformulating arguments. 9. Read the writing work before turning it in. ------------------------- @daydreammemories, @iloveyouxx, @enigmaticOcean8813, @hi66666, @Admirablerainbow2825, @TheCrew4887, @farhanR, @farhanR, @PsychPrashansa13.
Let's talk about burnout! 🧠💤

...See more Hey everyone, I hope you're all doing well! 😊 I wanted to start a conversation today about something I think a lot of us can relate to - student burnout 🧠💤 What is burnout? Burnout isn't just feeling tired after a long day of studying; it’s more than that. It’s when you feel emotionally, physically and mentally drained, like you’ve got nothing left to give. Suddenly, even the things you usually enjoy feel like a chore. Sound familiar? 😣 I know I’ve personally been there, especially during those crunch periods (exam season, I’m talking about you!). You might start feeling: * Exhausted even after resting * Unmotivated to do schoolwork or activities you usually enjoy * Like you’re constantly behind, no matter how much you do * Overwhelmed and anxious about deadlines or expectations If you're experiencing any of this, you're definitely not alone 💛 So, what can we do to about burnout? This can definitely vary between individuals and what works for one person may not work for another. Here are a few things that have helped me, but I’d love to hear your tips too! * Setting boundaries: It’s okay to say no sometimes. Balance is key. Carving out time for yourself, whether it's to chill, exercise, or do something fun is super helpful. * Take breaks: I know it feels like we don’t have time, but taking short, regular breaks can help you recharge. The Pomodoro technique (25 minutes study, 5-minute break) can be super effective. 🍅 * Stay organised: It can be so much more motivating to break tasks down into manageable chunks and using a planner or an app to keep track of them. Checking off tasks feels amazing and helps you see progress! * Talk about it: Sometimes, just venting to a friend or family member helps lighten the load. You can also share your experiences here - we're all here to support each other! 😊 * Self-care (it's not optional): Make sure you're getting enough sleep, eating properly, and doing things that make you happy. Burnout can hit harder if you're neglecting your physical and emotional needs. I'd love to hear from you! What are your experiences with burnout? Have you found any strategies that work for you? Let’s all share tips, encourage each other, and remember that it’s okay to take a step back when we need it. 💪✨ Sending positive vibes to all the hardworking students out there! 🌟  Can't wait to hear from you all ❤️
