Different note taking systems!
Hello hello! Happy Friday everyone! I hope everyone is doing well and has had a wonderful week. This week has been very interesting for me and we've had to take a couple of "swerves" on this road that is life but other than that I'm figuring stuff out and we'll all be okay. I'm going to be writing a few back-to-school posts in the next few weeks and what better way to start with note taking methods! 📃
Most people take physical notes on paper or in a notebook! Physical notes are a great way to actually memorize or understand what you're learning and can also be easily decorated/fancified with your own stickers, highlighters, pens, and more! All three systems are physical-note friendly, meaning you can definitely use all of these methods on paper. In terms of digital notes, whether that's drawing on a tablet or typing your notes, there are many templates online for cornell notes that you can find or create yourself! For the split page method, that might mean getting creative with "hide" features in different apps like google sheets or Notion. And for mindmaps, they can be created digitally through websites as well! 📃
Split page method!
How it works: On the left, you have your key words, vocabulary words, or bigger concepts that are a part of whatever you're studying. On the right side of your notes, you have an explanation of the concept on the other side of the notes! You can fold the paper up to create flashcards for yourself to memorize as well. Note that this is a note taking system that is better for more dense subjects like vocabulary terms for your language class or systems of government!
Cornell Notes
How it works: Cornell notes are extremely popular and possibly the most well-known notes! This is most likely because it works for almost all subjects. Cornell notes are great because they help you ask and answer questions about the content you're learning while being able to summarize or explain the content of the lesson!
Flow notes/mindmaps
Flowing notes/mindmaps are more free flowing and definitely lacks specific order! They're great for those who are taking classes in lectures that have no particular structure as well as visually organizing what the concepts would look like and why they're all connected! They may seem a little disorganized, but they are also extremely great to condense information into one page after you've first heard it from a lecture!

I typically take notes physically, although I cannot attest to the neatness of them!
What's your note taking system?
Calling the method by which I take notes a system would be quite the stretch! I typically jot down bullet points as I go, and indent or change the style of bullets as necessary to create headings, categories, subcategories, and different sections, but I don't really stick to a specific set of conventions. I have a tendency to be quite haphazard with my note-taking!

My favorite thing about back-to-school season is getting our schedules for the new school year and being able to compare schedules with my friends and peers to see what classes or teachers we have in common. Also, I simply love the first day of school: the opportunity to catch up with classmates and friends, the fact that you simply have to show up, and the homework you get (if any) is minimal!

Hey Ivyyyy <3 Omg we always talk in PMs but never in forums xD Hi! Ahaaa my notes aren't neat to me, but my peers always tell me that they are so I can sorta relate? XD Ugh omg I can really relate, my note taking system is just named Crystal's note taking system because it's a hot mess and mix of so many different things at this point! It has lines and arrows, different sections for different things, and all around understandable for me but not to someone else! So relatable. Ugh omg I 100% agree with you, comparing schedules is a joy that I won't get to experience this year I think 🥺but it'll be really interesting to see how my other friends (my friends who aren't doing the independent study program). I also love the first day of school as well!! all of it is so fun and it's great to see how people have changed over the summer and it's magical. Ugh! I wish I could experience that again but it's okay- I know I will next year :) Catching up (sometimes awkwardly) with people I haven't talked to all summer is amazing too and thank you for the compliment Ivy 🥺 take care and thanks for responding!

I take notes on paper whenever possible, I find it a lot more satifying to look back on and easier to keep track of. I've typed up my notes in a couple of classes, where the teacher talked so quickly it was impossible to keep up with handwritten notes D:

Usually just outlines/bullet points, with some color coding, underlining, and afterthoughts squashed into the margins :D
What's your favorite thing about back-to-school season?
New school supplies! There's something so satisfying and fresh about them, I could honestly spend forever in the school supply section at the store. Also just the idea of having a fresh start, even if that idealistic blank slate disappears once school actually starts. :(

Hugs!! Hi!! Ahhhh I can totally relate with the typed up notes with face-paced teachers, although I have this weird thing where I'll suddenly blank out whenever I'm typing notes so I end up actually doing the opposite and scrambling it all down instead on paper/on my tablet and trying to make out what I wrote afterwards. It's so true the writing on paper has a much more satisfying feeling though! I 100% get that. Your note taking system is so simple and basic ahhh I'm jealous! Simplicity is beautiful at times for notes and I love that for you. Ahhhh my favorite part of back-to-school season is school supplies as well! I'm a huge stationery hoarder and I have a lot of cool stuff that I've collected over the years so I can totally relate to you wanting to stand in front of stores all day. Pre-pandemic, I would do that even when school was in session hehe. Take careo and thank you for responding!
