Help with managing university workload
Hello everyone, posting for the first time here since I could really use some help right now. I'm a university student, so of course my workload is huge and with very tight deadlines, I get assignments from every class I'm in and they usually have a deadline of a week or less, and it was pretty much fine until about a month in the semester. Right now I'm struggling a lot more with concentrating and keeping things organized and meeting deadlines, I turned in an assignment a couple days late after a breakdown I had over stress and feelings of not putting in enough effort, added with some really nasty comments from my family. Wasn't pretty. Ended up missing the deadline for some other work for other classes since I was stuck trying to finish this very important project first.
It's been a couple weeks since that happened already, but I still feel so drained and exhausted and like I'm gonna be stuck with this big pile of unfinished assignments forever, I feel weak and groggy all day, I can't bring myself to even start thinking about my assignments, and the more I spend procrastinating the lazier I feel and of course that doesn't help at all. My mental health is generally very bad as of now, I don't know what to do to get myself to do stuff, it's like I'm immobilized. My family doesn't help me at all either. Any tips so I can get back to being productive or so I can feel a little better? Any help is appreciated, thank you.
Hi💘
I’m so sorry that you feel this way I hope these tips can help you
first I think instead of looking at your assignments and workload as a burden try and remember why you’re doing what you are. Look at the bigger picture and where you will be at the end of this
the most important thing you need is motivation which I know is so tricky in a situation like this but it’s the small efforts you make to reach your goals that help
your phone and other devices don’t help with motivation and suck it away quite quickly
i think your should set an alarm on your phone for a set study period and then put it away. Study in that time complete your assignments or whatever it is that you need to do and once that timer goes off you put all work away and have time to yourself
I know all of this is easier said than done but trust me it will be worth it and you can do it
completing assignments for set dates is tough I understand
another small suggestion is maybe join a study group with friends or just people who are doing the same course as you that will support you and with other people around you who are doing the same things as you, you are much more likely to complete your assignments and tasks.
Really hope this helps remember you can do this and I love you 💘💘💘💘💘
It's time to buckle down and get tough, you've got this!
For starters, I recommend working somewhere you can work with minimal distractions. Instead of working at home where your family annoys you, work at a library if you can.
Suppose you have a short problem set that was assigned, and you just got out of lecture for the relevant class. Take the hour or two and do that problem set ASAP after you learned and got familiar with the concept being tested.
Something that helped me in the past is taking a quick look at everything I need to do. I made quick notes, and also thought about how long everything will take me so I can schedule things out. Even if I didn't finish the task right away, the notes helped me remember "Oh yeah, that's what this was/that's what I was thinking I needed to do/finish, I need to rewrite this now, I need to look up this thing..."
You can consider getting a planner/journal to help keep you organized. Or just use a notebook/binder you already have and keep your schedule/deadlines noted in the front. I just used a simple piece of A4 paper folded in half to keep track of assignments and such. It looked unusual and out of place so it drawed attention, and I'm not the kind of person who would throw things from my bag out without looking at them so that worked for me. You can also opt for digital options, lots of operating systems even have a default "sticky notes" app you can keep on your desktop!
