Problems with Math

Hello everyone! Today I'm writing to you to ask some advice regarding mathematics. I'm "new" in learning this subject and I'm trying very hard to prepare myself for the entrance examination of university. I'm study by following a very good online math course, but I must confess that sometimes I find very difficult to understand the logics behind certain topics (for example combinatorics). Growing up I've always struggled with this subject even though I love and enjoy it. My teacher and dad always called me stupid or handicapped every time I made a mistake so now I find very challenging not thinking about those things when I study something new or difficult. I kinda feel stuck and sometimes I feel pain in my chest when I don't understand something. Do you have any kind of suggestion regarding both of these problems? Thank you so much for the help and support.

I know the feeling all too well. I struggled a lot with math on school and in fact anything theoretical. The math equations and concepts to my mind is "theory" that I need to hang on to in order to use it in practice and, among other things, I am horrible at theoretical learning.

When you start feeling that sensation in your chest, take a breather and relax. Don't dive into the question and try to immediately answer it. Instead, read through it and then make a checklist for yourself of the steps you need to take to get to the answer. Ask your self honestly, whether you know how to solve the type of problem. If your answer is no, revert to your text books and work through the problem to create a checklist of things you need to do.

If your answer is yes, then you have nothing to fear. Just be confident in yourself and follow your checklist once you have read through the question and identified all the variables and steps that you need to take.

It's important to put aside those feelings of being "inept" because you are not. Don't listen to those memory's and don't stress over your mistakes, we all make them. If there's one thing I have learned, it's that the school system is not 100% fool proof. Some of us thrive on theoretical learning, others require a more practical environment and there is nothing wrong with that. I did a lot better in Tech than what I did in school for the very reason that school focuses on theoretical knowledge while Tech focuses on practical learning.
