Procrastination Issues

I have major procrastination when it comes to writing essays. I'll usually put it off to the last minute because it's so overwhelming to look at, which only really makes it worse for me. However, somehow I enjoy the pressure (although its so painfully stressful). I've always gotten high marks as well, despite procrastination, and have convinced myself that procrastination is the key to high grades (sounds silly, I know). I really want to break this habit though, I hate the stress. Any ideas?

Seems you never bothered taking the steps to fix your procrastination because you've always done well. It's like the whole Pavlovianconditioned and unconditioned response thing when associating behaviors with outcomes. You associate good grades and a rush with procrastination because you've always gotten good grades when you did procrastinate. But I'm sure procrastination has nothing to do with your good grades. So if you really do want to fix it I'm sure your grades won't suffer.

Ok yeah I've struggled with procrastination for most of my school life. My procrastination habit hits hard when I even attempt projects or essays that are worth a lot of points so yeah I tend to freak out over this!

I know this takes a lot of self-control and discipline to do, but I just think about the future stress I'll have if I procrastinate, and what I would be able to do after I finish my work. The thought of being able to watch tv or read in peace without the stress and guilt of not having completed my work yet is usually enough to motivate me to start working. Also, treat yo' self! Give yourself a little treat (eg a mini frapfrom Starbucks perhaps?) once you meet a checkpoint in your work :)

Here is a little secret: Bill Gates did the same thing you did and look where he is now. He said that people when are procrastinating try to find the easiest and most efficient solutions to their problems, so this forces the brain to use all the resources at maximum capacity to find innovating and new ideas that get you the best possible result. Most people who are intelligent procrastinate a lot because their brains (at a subconscious level) know that they can handle it :)
