Homeschoolers Unite!!!

User Profile: jesusredeemedme2425

This will be our place to talk about homeschooling (HS)!

Some ideas:

Were you homeschooled? Are you homeschooling your child? Which is best, HS or public school? Do you prefer unschooling? Field trips? Unit studies? Co-ops? Would you homeschool your future kids? Any funny/cool/sad/etc memories of being homeschooled? What did a typical homeschool day look like for you? What curriculum did you love/hate? Did your homeschool focus on reading a lot, or doing more hands-on projects? And anything else related to homeschooling that you can possibly think of! <3

For those of you reading this who weren't homeschooled... Ask away! Make comments! Tell us your thoughts! I'd love to hear from all sides :)

@jesusredeemedme2425 your name is kiara? That's such a pretty name ❤❤ I never went to any school ever. I was not homescholed either, I have not been educated. My owners taught me how to read and write, but that was it. So I'm the past 4 years I've had to learn everything, from the internet, technology, animals, places everything.

kiara you were homescholed?? What was that like? Would you of liked to have gone to school? I think I would of liked school

I think both normal schools and home school have different benefits, although it depends on where you live. And what your home is like🤔🤔🤔🤔

@Tinywhisper11

Actually it isn’t, it’s my chosen name for 7Cups lol! It was inspired by The Lion King 2 <3 My real name is equally as pretty tho hehe! And thank you <3

Awwww I’m sorry! :( I’m very confused about your life if you had owners and not parents O.O

Have you thought about giving yourself an education? Like using Khan Academy, books, audiobooks, TED Talks, YouTube videos, etc? I do self-directed learning myself… I learn whatever I feel like lol!

I was :) My mom was an amazing teacher! <3 It was pretty cool. My mom gave me a bunch of textbooks to read and work on, we did field trips, I was part of co-ops, etc. I was probably more socialized than public schoolers!!! Lol

Nah, I’m glad I didn’t get exposed to sex and drugs and stuff. Also, I’m autistic, so imagine how much more teasing and shunning and bullying I would have gotten in public school!

True. I wouldn’t want to be homeschooled in an super abusive home. :(

So here’s your challenge, Lola… What are you going to teach yourself next? ;)

Ask me anything you want about homeschooling!!! <3 <3 <3

@jesusredeemedme2425 I am learning every day 😁❤ I just look up whatever interests me, it's surprising how much I've learnt these past 4 years. I think I'm doing quite well ❤❤

You don't really want to no about my life.

I'm glad your mum was such a wonderful teacher ❤❤

And yeah bullying in public schools is really really really bad

@jesusredeemedme2425 I have depression, anxiety, emotionally unstable and cptsd. I'm in a wheelchair because the bottom of my spine is broken and not completely fixable, so I'm half paralysed and they had to amputate my legs a few years ago. I only have my thumbs and 4 fingers left.

you still wanna do this??!?!? Or shall we just crown me the winner???

What’s the difference between PTSD and CPTSD?

Wha…. How does one break the bottom of their spine???? Owwwwwww :(

I’m so sorry… I wish I could magically make it better <3

Why only 4 fingers left?

Yes you win hehe… Although I do have various types of abuse in my past, so I’m still in the game technically hehe

@jesusredeemedme2425

Thanks for posting this amazing thread, jes. 💙❤️

I have been homeschooled for 15 yrs now. Its one of the worst thing life has thrown at me. 💔 Because my cut off from teens my age, and because homeschooling are not common here in this country. And everybody keeps asking me why aren't I in school and this has resulted to my social anxiety.

I loves books and I wanna to attend med school in America.

My favouite subject is linguistic (I am now a blingual and will be taking IELTs soon, after that I intent to learn French and Spanish too)

I am currently learning math, English, science and phsycology. (Must say that I am a novice at all of them, only started on math a yr ago .now I am starting on Algbre 1,9 grade)

Its really hard to keep our head up having an abnormal education background than most people here, yet, we am still teens and explorers of the world.  I hope all of us will find accptance and love despite our deferences. 🍀

@Apeatrice

Have you thought about asking to change to public school? Or joining/starting clubs, etc, to get more interaction with other teens?

What are your parents’ reasons for homeschooling you?

What country are you in? (You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.) Homeschooling in America was viewed as weird until COVID, until EVERYONE had to homeschool!!!! Lol!

What kind of books do you like? What would you like to do at med school?

What’s an IELT?

I don’t understand math at all XD

I agree… I wish everyone got along even when people are different. Especially with autism! (I have Aspergers).

Hi buddy. Thanks for replying my post.

hugs tight*if ok… I am sorry abt the Asperger. It sounds like helly tough. …☹️

To start off, I did try to get "more chances for social interactions"by enrolling on some volunteer projects…but my mom appose me to go out and yk…

In term of why I am being homeschooled, it's actually abit complicated to explain. Lets just say "I am sorry to say I am not the genius my mom thought I was. "

I am from China. It kind of sucks, b/c we (not this ape) have an system of compulsory education …

I loves reading biographies, novels (few of them anyway) and lauguage art.

IELTS is an English standard test that I need to take so as to my mom off my back…(I needs a miracle, have to achieve a perfect score of 8🙄)

I aren't liking math too, I am back to 7 grade. Lmao 🤣

I love hugs!!! <3 Like Olaf hehe

Why does she oppose it? Would she agree if it was a volunteer project group that was also educational?

I’ve heard that people in Asian countries (I think it’s China but not sure) have heavy burdens of educational expectations for their kids. I wish they didn’t… That would be so stressful :(

What’s compulsory education?

What biographies do you like to read?

Why do you need a perfect score?

I can’t do math if my life depended on it XD

Hi Kiara(?)

*big tight hugs*(if accepted ofc)

I was kind of triggered by the first question, my mom said since its plain oblivious that I can't even keep myself alive. Volunteer is definitely not appropriate.

It is true, I am in China and we have this test which is like our lives depends on it….and parents here are quite …abt scores  (I don't wanna expand more, forgive me. But it's also a trigger for me…)

Compulsory is like required. So yeah, we have 9 yrs of them. 6 Yrs in primary school, 3 in secondry… and than this test mentioned above which would like if you failed you can't go to college …

I like books wrote by people like me (ppl with experiences of abuse, homeschool …) like books by Helen Keller, Tara Westover …

I have two reasons why I needs to achieve that score; 1, I needs to do it b/c I have spent like 4 yrs on this language and it only seems right. 2, if I don't my family is going to … me.

I cant solve math problems to save my life too. But we can learn and make friends with math. Yk…

🤍

Yes, I’m going by Kiara here :)

Triggered by what first question? I don’t understand the first paragraph.

I wonder why school scores are so important in China?

Wow. That one test can keep you out of college??? No pressure right??? Ugh…

You should read the books by the two Duggar girls, Becoming Free Indeed and Counting the Cost. TW on the second one, I couldn’t finish it.

Math is annoying XD

@jesusredeemedme2425

I attended public school until 3rd grade, then my mom pulled both me and my little brother out and homeschooled us.  As to why; long story short I was heavily mistreated by both the teachers and students.  It got so bad that my younger brother tried to protect me, and was told by the bully that he was going to kill him....  Mom felt that not only were either of us not learning, but also getting to the point that she feared that something would happen to us if we stayed.

We used Switched on Schoolhouse for our curriculum, it's computer software that taught math, science, history, language, and Bible study.  Honestly my only complaint was that it covered more geometry than algebra.  We also joined Greenhouse, a homeschooling group that had classes and activities that you could sign up for.  Through that my brother and I joined Kids on The Block; a puppetering troop that taught disability awareness.   The main character that my brother played was Mark; a young man with CP.  I played two characters, Brenda and Molly; Brenda had ADHD, and Molly had vision issues (glasses not blind).  Unfortunately we only got to do that for a year, since the program was shut down after that.  We also signed up for 4-H together, and had a lot of fun in it.  I also took dance classes, My brother joined Civil Air Patrol; pretty much civilian air force.  Years after that we started Taekwondo, and we've both reached 2nd degree black belt rank.

As far as other things that we did, that other kids may not have had the opportunity to do...

I'd say the biggest one would be our experiences with animals and animal rescue.

When we were young mom and dad ran a kennel and bred Siberian Huskies, Akita, Maine ***, and Bengal cats; we would help by feeding them, helping clean pens, and playing with them.  As we got older it became harder for my parents to find trustworthy owners for their puppies and kittens.  So they ended turning their kennel into a boarding facility, which they ran for a long time.  Around that time my family and 4-H group started a rescue for rabbits, that we called Recycled Rabbits.  We would take rabbits from various places like shelters that couldn't keep them, owners that couldn't (or wouldn't) take care of them, or that had been dumped somewhere.  After giving them necessary treatment we would find them new homes. It was through Recycled Rabbits that i had my first experience with animal hoarding.....  I'm not talking about that right now

Eventually the organization was taken from us by another 4-H group, but crazily enough it didn't take long for us to get back into rescue.  A humane investigator by the name of Julie approached my parents, with the intention of using their kennels to house rescue animals.  They weren't doing much with it at the time, so they said sure.  After that it was like we were breeding again, my brother and I cleaned pens, fed animals, and played with them; but new jobs were also added.  We helped with micro chipping workshops, adoption events, we'd help with capturing and spaying/neutering feral cats.  The biggest thing that I did with that rescue was assist in an undercover investigation of a sale barn that was illegally selling certain animals, as well as mistreating them.  It was around this time that I took the test to become a humane investigator myself.  I was able to serve for 2 years before the organization collapsed. Long story short; 2008 economic collapse......

I'm going to cut it short here.....

After graduating from high school mom had us attend community college for a year, so we'd have education records for other colleges.  My brother dropped out, but i stayed and got my Associates degree; after that I got a Bachelor's in Geology at a different college.

That pretty much is the end of my journey so far, i've been trying to get a job in my field since then.  I did work in Wisconsin for a little bit, but otherwise it's been living with my family and working part time while i'm searching for a better job and getting some small businesses off the ground.

That should be enough of an essay for now lol

It's been a bit since i've been here lol.

I used to collect rocks when i was little and somewhat grew out of it.  When i was about 16 i attended a rock and gem show with my family, and it kind of skyrocketed from there lol.  I joined the local club and started going on field trips, helping with club events, having meetings and workshops.  I pretty much dragged my family in kicking and screaming lol

Content warning: potentially triggering subject

I've just been really busy lately.  My mom broke her arm earlier this year, so I've been helping her with a lot of things.  On top of that work has been crazy, and so has my little brother.... He was a recovering drug addict, but relapsed recently.   I'm actually in the ER right now.... He tried to kill himself by ODing.

But on a happier note, my mom is the president of our rock and gem club now; so to say they're pretty involved would be an understatement
