Binge drinking
I used to drink atleast every other day for about 3 years but I recently had a breakthrough when my mother was hospitalised in December last year. I only drink on occasions now or atleast once every 2 weeks to once a month BUT once I start drinking I am physically unable to stop myself and over drink way to much to a point where something small can upset me and I'll actively try to end my life resulting in me being sent to hospital on multiple occasions. Would you still consider me an alcoholic? And do you have any tips on how to avoid alcohol in general or how to not over drink to that point?
@beomtiger following, im going through this now. i understand a bit what you are saying.
I can relate to this. I used to binge drink when I was younger because I was nervous about being around strangers at parties and other social events. I just keep drinking until I was almost numb and I even blacked out a few times. I stopped after I met the man who is now my husband, but I started again during covid quarantine because I was bored and lonely and we lived in a poorly maintained rental that was covered in mold and making me sick.
I couldn't fully admit that my drinking was a problem until I watched The Flight Attendant show. I saw a lot of myself in the main character and I didn't like that. I was dealing with my anxiety, trauma and depression with alcohol and it was not good for me. It took some time to face my issues with alcohol and resisting the urge to drink is an ongoing process, but I haven't had a single drink in more than two months, so I am making some progress. I don't feel like it's my place to say whether you are an alcoholic, though I was sorry to read that you tried to take your own life. I have had those thoughts before and while I haven't acted on them, I came very close. I understand the pain and self-hatred that leads us to feel like life is not worth living. I hope you are able to find meaning and contentment in life.
One thing that helps me to avoid alcohol is journaling about the reason(s) I want to drink and convincing myself that it will not help my situation. I had a pretty powerful craving a couple of days ago after receiving a large bill, and I almost convinced myself to just have one drink. I had to remind myself that if I had one, it would likely lead to at least 3 or 4 and that would not make me feel better. If I got drunk, I would be right back where I started and all the problems that caused me to drink would still be there when I sobered up. If you need something to take the edge off and you like tea, herbal tea helps me quite a bit. I drink Yogi Stress Relief Elderberry Lemon Balm. It's a much healthier way to relax and it tastes good, too. I wish you well and I hope that I was able to help by sharing my story.
I relate to this so much. Recently divorced. I feel super empty when the kids are gone and i binge drink. I wake up in the morning hating myself and wanting to get help. I want to be happy again.
I started out as a binge drinker early in life and then became a full-blown alcoholic. I'm just starting to come to terms with my alcoholism. And I'm 55.
I feel for you. I stop and about every 3 weeks I go out and loose conntrol
If you’re drinking alcohol every other day, it doesn’t sound good, but it depends on how much you would actually drink. Doesn’t sound like you’re absolutely dependent on it, but if you continue to binge every couple of weeks, it’s eventually going to lead to every week, and then every day. Alcohol is a dark rabbit hole to climb out of. Go to therapy and talk to somebody about the trauma you’re going through. Alcohol and drugs are not the answer my friend.
I can relate. I am currently struggling to stop drinking. I won’t drink everyday, but wait till the weekend to just let go. There are occasions where I could get confrontational, which has been the reason I want to stop drinking.
i just can’t find something that can make me relax like drinking does.

Sometimes it happens to me too. Right now I'm trying to limit myself to 1 drink a day for the whole year of 2023. That's 365 drinks I'm willing to allow myself total. So far, I'm over my recommended limit by 4, and it was mostly because of one binge.
I gotta say, I'm sick of how binging makes me feel, and how it just seems to happen to me sometimes despite my efforts. Like that feeling of constant dehydration, maybe a slight need to throw up, memory getting spotty... I hate all of that. It's also hard for me to have short of 3 drinks... 1-2 doesn't seem to effect me lately, and I don't like that either.
