I have had a long time alcohol addiction. I have done some dumb things to get the booze and not too proud of most. Now I'm in a 4 year probation program and they require me a sponsor but I have No idea the first step towards this. I know people in my AA vlasses but it has to be an at least 2yr recovery person. If anyone can head me to the right direction and/or tell me of a sponsot program or be a sponsor I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

@LostInTheWorld956 Welcome to the community, I'm glad that you're here. A lot of us have done things that we aren't proud of due to our addictions, there's no judgement here.

I've found the best place to find a sponsor is in an anonymous meeting, personally. (AA, NA, meetings like that.) A lot of the meetings that I've attended asks for everyone who is accepting sponsees to raise their hand at the end of the meeting so I would encourage you to go and talk to someone who does raise their hand and ask them to sponsor you. smiley If the question isn't asked at the end of the meeting, another good way to find a sponsor is to listen during the meeting and if you find someone that you feel you would connect well with, go up to them after the meeting and ask them if they're accepting sponsees. If they aren't, you can always ask someone else. smiley

I hope to see you around the community and that you have a good day. heart

Hey hi and welcome!

well where i am it is not so simple. They say that you are supposed to find someone who has what you want and is continually sober. And it is not a permanent commitment. I agonized over asking someone. I had several temporary sponsors until i found a good fit. If you can visit meetings in nearby cities, that would give you an opportunity to meet more possible sponsors. Do any of your buddies have a good sponsor where you're at now? I would look for someone with sponsoring experience and as many years sober as I could still relate to. Another idea would be to ask that power greater than yourself to help you find a sponsor. Take 30 seconds before you go in to a meeting alone with your HP. This will work. I am certain. You do this with a sincere heart, and see what happens.

oh i see, when i read it again, yes i agree get out to the AA / NA meetings in your town. They don't do the hand raising here. If you like what you hear, you just hang out after the meeting and ask. You can have a new life, one day at a time. We all have a mess of things to get through when we start recovery.
