Dear Beloved,

One cannot quit in a day or a week. It can take longer than expected because you are trying to break a habit that has developed over many years. But that does not mean that you cannot overcome it.

Alcohol can change brain chemistry. If you drink regularly and suddenly stop, your body may experience withdrawal symptoms. This is one reason it can become difficult to rely on willpower alone when withdrawal symptoms are intense. Medical treatment can help manage withdrawal symptoms and support you as you work towards reducing or stopping alcohol use.

If stopping suddenly is difficult, you can discuss a safe reduction plan with a healthcare professional rather than trying to manage withdrawal on your own. If you are able to follow your plan, reward yourself for your efforts. You can continue progressing according to your plan and reward yourself for each step you successfully complete.

Participating in sports, going to the gym, cycling, or doing other forms of physical activity can help you manage stress and redirect your attention towards healthier activities.

Maintaining friendships with people who do not drink can also encourage you to stay away from alcohol. Maintaining some distance from people or situations that strongly encourage you to drink can also be helpful. Every little effort can help you move towards your goal.

You can sit with yourself and ask questions such as: Why do I drink? Why do I still drink when I want to stop drinking? What is stopping me from stopping drinking? What does alcohol give me? Can I get these benefits from healthier alternatives? What triggers me to drink? What do I need to change in my lifestyle to reduce my dependence on alcohol? Is drinking becoming more important to me than my health and life?

I wish you strength as you work towards your goal of becoming alcohol-free. Please remember that you do not have to achieve your goal all at once; you can take it one step at a time.

Take care of yourself, Beloved. 💕

It makes total sense that it feels that way. Addiction often gives us a sense of relief or comfort when nothing else seems to, which makes letting go feel terrifying. You aren't alone in feeling stuck in that push-and-pull. When I was looking for a way out, what helped me was taking it just one day at a time and finding a community of people who truly understood the struggle without judgment. Be gentle with yourself as you figure this out.
