Alcohol addiction
Hi, I’m new, today is my first time even hearing of cups, and I've been struggling with a lot of different things for a long time. I usually don’t talk to anyone about my feelings other than a therapist, but I really want to move forward in my life, and I feel like this will help, so here goes nothing, I guess 😬 I seem to only want alcohol when my depression gets worse. I can go months without even thinking about a drink, unless I’m depressed, then I drink whatever I can get my hands on. I don’t go out of my way to get it or anything, but if it’s in the house I’ll drink it. I’ve been struggling with this for about 10 years, I’ve tried different therapists, I’ve tried AA, and whenever I think I’m alright, I somehow screw everything up again. I don’t know why I keep drinking, but I know I need to change, and I want to change! I’m waiting for my insurance application to process, then I think I’m going to try an inpatient program, preferably at a dual diagnosis facility so I can get to the root of the problem 😮💨
Hi, nice hearing from you. I've struggled with sort of the same thing And what I realised is that the reason I'd default to alcohol when feeling down is because my brain recognises it as more of a solution than a problem. Which is sort of true in that moment, alcohol gives that euphoria and alleviates your stresses at the time. Your brain is used to that, and when your stressed that's what it seeks.
I'd just say, first give yourself grace. It gets hard sometimes and the pressure/stresses pushes us into things we thought we'd healed from.
Also, I realised that my major problem was that I never really learned healthy ways to deal with stress, alcohol was my go to through most of my adult life. And I needed to explore different and healthier coping mechanisms.
I'm currently on my journey exploring that and its been challenging but I feel and love the progress.
Idk if any of this helps but I just wanted to tell you that you're not alone, and you can do it!🙂
