What do I do about my alcoholic dad?

I love the guy but there has always been an awkward disconnect with him. I am 28 and I had to move back in with him and my mom this year due to rent going up too high. I am so grateful for them but it is painful when it is just me and my dad at home. My mom works still and is nearing retirement. My dad has been retired and on disability for a few years now. I can't help but want to avoid him despite how much I care. I really want him to enjoy the rest of his life and be healthy but he seems afraid to ask the real important questions and get out of his comfort zone. He has always been that way. I feel like I am too though. All we do is talk sports and his past from time to time. I can't stand it. I wish I could live away from him but I feel terrible about it. I'm just so used to him being in the background of my life due to his problems with anxiety and alcohol. I want Him to know Christ as I do as well. These deep personal topics just feel almost impossible to try and have with him. Even listening to him talk about his past was uncomfortable for me but I appreciated him doing it. Like...I could barely make eye contact...I have a feeling I need to force myself to talk about things I don't want to and that is going to be hard...any encouragement and advice is appreciated. I just feel a lot about this and need compassion.

Also, he gets high all the time now too because he is mad bored due to having nothing to do and not getting out of his comfort zone. From what I've seen, his whole life has been like this...running away when things get tough. And now...I think I do the same thing. This is why I think I need to force myself. Thoughts?

@emotionalBanana4556 Not your job to change him. You will exhaust yourself if you try. You need to respect his navigating his life as he is. Not all change is about breaking out of your comfort zone. Sometimes that pressure to break out is what makes the comfort zone that much more cozy and inviting. Sometimes change is about finding new ways to be comfortable in the situation one is in. Don’t assume the only thing you need is to be harder on yourself.
