Share Something You Have Learned in Therapy

Hi Online Therapy Community :)
I am glad you are here with us! Therapy is a very personal experience and for people who choose to go to therapy, there can be so many positive lessons that are learned!
For those that have had therapy before whether that is on 7 Cups or elsewhere, what have you learned during your sessions? It could be something, for example, learning how to ground yourself if you've felt anxious or perhaps it is working on taking small steps to become healthier in your life (with whatever steps are achievable for you).
@LisaMeighanMScGMBPsS therapy taught me that I am not the limited person that the world tries to convince me I was. I am someone with unique, marvelous qualities that cares about people.
Therapy taught me to be grateful for what I received and also for what I gave. Even people I have disagreed with showed me some kindness.
Therapy gave me a new perspective on who I am and helped me drop the ideas that may have been helpful once, but from which I have outgrown.
@soulsings
Wow. I love these lessons you learned in therapy Soul! Thank you for sharing it with us :) I think you are a truly grateful individual and it is great to see you strengthen it in therapy.
@LisaMeighanMScGMBPsS you are welcome.

My therapist used to say: you do a good job. You are good enough. Just good things about me. It was hard to believe it but her words started to work.
@kala that is wonderful to see you responding to positive reinforcement.
@kala
This is beautiful and thank you so much for sharing. We need to hear that we are doing a good job and that we are doing the best we can. It is very empowering to hear this and so very true about you. Thank you for sharing with us!
@LisaMeighanMScGMBPsS I was rescued from a bad situation that went on for 18 years I'm 21 now and I have been having therapy for all sorts of things. I'm not sure I'm very good at it though coming to terms with reality of the situation is really hard. But I'm trying and learning coping mechanism like breathing and focusing on one thing to come around from panic attacks. I'm trying that's all I can do I guess
@Tinywhisper11 you are a brave person who has managed to move to a more positive attitude even in the midst of difficult circumstances. I am thoroughly inspired by your life and how you never give up.
One place people go for comfort and support are the guided and moderated discussions on serious and sometimes not so serious topics. This is a quite unique experience and we welcome all 18+ older to these discussions. You can find the discussions here https://www.7cups.com/forum/50OverCommunity_193/TeamToolsandTeamUpdates_1705/50plusDiscussionsScheduleandTopics_207920/
@Tinywhisper11
And you are doing so so well to continue trying despite all of the tough times you have experienced. I think you are very good at it, you know why? Because you continue to show up and face your fears and concerns. Learning how to use breathing techniques is great. Have you ever tried other grounding techniques? They can be useful too.
When it comes to the therapy I usually recommend to everyone to watch a to show “ being Erica” it works as therapy itself.

Hello
For me, it was learning about myself, and the way I avoid the real issues of which I was unaware of. I was unaware that I was guarded or even that I shut down. Now I notice them and try to correct myself.
Being able to change what you never knew is a process I am working diligently on.
@BubblegumPuppy
Wow, this is so very insightful. It is wonderful that you learned more about yourself and the blind spots in your life that you can work on in therapy. I am sure that has helped you to understand yourself more too! How did your therapist help you see the blind spots in your life?
@LisaMeighanMScGMBPsS
While we talked there were periods when I was being unresponsive claimed up and really shut down.
I was really unaware when it was happening, she felt that I was actually disassociating. I was totally unaware of this. The being guarded I really kind of felt that because of a lack of Trust issues. I was cautious of my words and things that I told her which were not beneficial for my health or her help. We started with just doing EMDR which was unproductive and caused more irritations and triggers so it was stopped. One year of seeing her before she was really able to give me a diagnosis.
@LisaMeighanMScGMBPsS I have learnt a great technique "The Container" from therapy. It allows me to keep intense emotions lock up after surfacing so I could get on with my normal life! It is really helpful for in between sessions. Otherwise, I would be so overwhelmed and not be able to do much.
@turquoiseBranch8244
Oooh, I love this exercise! I think it is a great way to learn how to control your anxiety and stress levels at a time when you feel like you cannot explore them, and come back to whatever is concerning you at a time that may be better for you.
@turquoiseBranch8244 great idea.
I did not think of that exactly in those terms, but at my last job I would keep all the emotions in a can inside and then at lunch I would walk or exercise and empty the can. With a frustrating job, that was a life saver.
Anybody need a well used emotion container? lol
Thank you to all of you for sharing such useful techniques and different perspectives. Keep them coming! I am sure they are going to help others too :)
