Counselling
Does anybody know if counselling/therapy etc actually helps your mental health get better?
Yes, careful research over many, many years has shown beyond any doubt that it can do, and vast numbers of people have personal experience of it, too. However, I was careful to write "can do". People's experiences vary quite a lot.
I'm wondering, of course, what makes you ask the question ;) Feel free to follow up here in the forum, or send me a message if you like.

I believe it depends. Not every counseling form is for everybody. This is why there are different types and people must research very carefully before choosing where to go to receive help.
CBT is well known to help depression, phobias and anxiety for example. CBT stands for cognitive behavioral therapy. There are however many other types such as experiential, adlerian, client focused, etc. and it's up to you to be able to choose which may be better for you or not. It's alright to realize after a few sessions that a certain therapist you chose you go to isn't really what you were looking for.
Same with Listeners / Therapists here on 7 Cups. It's alright if you realize text-based discussions (online) aren't for you and you would feel better to speak in person or vice versa.
But yes, therapy does help. Some people prefer not to go to therapy and instead to seek a psychiatrist and receive treatment with meds. None of these are better or worse. All are to help you.
Good luck!
@imaginativeMelon7014 There are therapists and counsellors who because one approach may not work for a particular client, train in integrative psychotherapy and counselling so they can adapt the therapeutic approach to what suits their clients, drawing on a whole range of approaches. I think any form of help whether it be counselling/therapy/self help groups etc which enables someone to develop more of a self awareness and insight into their troubles, helps long term with mental health and wellbeing :)
