My friend survived a college shooting
TW: gun violence
Whenever I think about how my friend survived a school shooting, I get anxious. Like, this kind of stuff shouldn't happen! I wasn't even there at the shooting and I feel guilty for even being affected by it. I seem more affected by the shooting than my friend even was, and he was there on campus with a murderer! And I'm so angry because it took the cops 3 hours to get this guy! Like come on! We knew where the gunshots we're coming from, why didn't they do anything!!!

I don't think you should feel bad for being affected by hearing about the school shooting. School shootings don't just affect the students and teachers, but the whole community, and as frequently as they are happening, I feel like should be a legit concern for any American that cares about human life. One of my favorite ways to release how things make me feel is through writing. Several years ago I wrote a paper for one of my English classes in college about how bullying and abuse can lead to school shootings. I think at the time of the paper the main shootings that happened were by people who had been bullied in school. My paper took the approach of how bullying affects the brain development of individuals. It was quite an interesting research paper. I think now there's so much more behind school shootings than bullying, and they're becoming so sensationalized that it's happening more and more frequently and something needs to be done.
I've been out of my undergraduate degree for 5 years almost and I'm considering going back for a Master's degree, but to be honest I'm terrified of being on a college campus again. I have 2 nieces, one in second grade and another starting Kindergarten this year and I'm so terrified for them going to school. I have a few friends who work in schools, some as teachers and one as a therapist and I just worry about them constantly.
It's a scary world and a scary reality. Your friend who was there may appear as if they weren't badly affected but I feel like many people in those situations experience shock which they may not experience the emotional affects one might expect them to experience after going through something like that.
