Trauma Support Check in Wednesday December 2nd

December 2nd, 2020

Hiya peeps welcome to the Wednesday check in. Hope your doing pawsome today but if not that's ok to, feel free to tell us about it.

Today's check on is on dealing with trauma through art. At the bottom I will include some related links. FPZA1JDCKSxZCaD1GtJ4VHgtKBmFnNuW7SfYi5klZD-KqsIa8-pBOCkEkMzvMvLalATnMwzG2uXcaJOnVa1IxrijhfTbYrMocKFGmDcInKlgJOiHoDBWK8l65ma_Rvz42nY8VL3U

Art is a powerful tool for dealing with stress and helping to overcome trauma. art helps process traumatic events in a new way, It provides an outlet when words fail, making art whether via collage, painting, drawing, sculpting, dancing, making music, ect has the potential to help individuals heal through very traumatic circumstances.

Art is healing because it forces you to forge a connection between your mind and your body. Unlike exercise, which works your body, or meditation, which clears your mind, art-making accesses both mind and body to promote healing.

Icebreaker: what is your favorite form of art?

Question 1: Do/Have you used art to deal with your stress and or trauma?

Question 2: would you care to share a piece of art you created with us?

As always these questions are optional, feel free to say hi,pick up or drop off a hug or 2.

Thanks so much for participating.

My favourite form of art is photography. I do landscape, nature and sometimes wildlife photography.

I do and I have used photography to deal with stress and trauma. Long before I started landscape photography, I've always had such a deep interest and connection with nature and the natural world. I love exploring and I love being out in the wilderness learning about geology and different types of environments. I guess photography has helped me gain a better perspective and appreciation of nature, but along with my mental health, it's helped me see colour and beauty in the world again. I'm always inspired by wild and natural places as they evoke so much mood and emotion when different elements (such as the weather) interact with it. I guess in a way it's quite humbling and makes me feel insignificant. I guess that translates well to my own emotions and easier for me to connect with it.

I'm not going to post my favourite photo in here but it's a photo of a tall volcanic mountain which was seen from where I was standing over 200km away. Around winter, the atmosphere and the skies are often clearer especially after a cold Antarctic blast. Due to the curvature of the earth, I couldn't see the whole mountain, only half of the landform was visible. But as the sun was setting and I was shooting some images, the mountain stood there dominating the blank landscape and the sea for hundreds of kilometres, against vivid sunset hues. It was one of the most beautiful things I've seen in my time outdoors.

You're pawsome @Fireskye13 thanks laugh

I'm not in the US although I've heard of Mt St Helens. The eruption in May 1980 is well known around the world among people interested in volcanology and geology because it had the largest recorded debris avalanche in the world. The northern flank of that volcano was bulging, as a result of the magma or steam venting pushing on a certain angle which was aimed at the slope of the volcano. Volcanic unrest continued which lead to an eruption, triggering one or two earthquakes which then caused a massive debris avalanche. The northern face (shown in your photo) was the side that collapsed. You can see inside the crater now where there's a lava dome and apparently a glacier in there. Pretty facinating stuff.

@Fireskye13 Hey Skye - great checkin :)

I like most forms of art - I really admire people who can draw or paint and people who can write poetry are amazing

I used to go to an art therapy thing but th virus has pretty much put all that stuff on hold. I do woodworking myself - mostly furniture but I had started making little things for fun but my motivation took a hit in september and I haven't touched any thing I had going

Thank you for the checkin Skye - stay awesome :)

@Fireskye13

I've heard it said:

Life is an art form and the purpose of art is to enjoy it!smiley

I have this posted on a sticky note at my desk as a reminder to myself to relax and find joy in living each day.

I finished a course on discovering unity through viewing art and various forms of literature.

I am finding it very healing and helping evoke emotion and contemplation which is very grounding for me.

@Fireskye13

As always, my loved friend is so pawsome and I'm so proud of her. I liked this post very much because it helped me to understand what bonds we can create with our mind and body in search for recovery. I'd say that I have a very special bond, especially, with music (which answers the icebreaker 🤭). It has the power to translate me to other places and times, where I can be myself, free of pain and memories. I just close my eyes and listen and let the melody carry me in its magical arms. It soothes me. Another great form of art is writing (and reading, of course). It allows me to pour on paper so many things that are in my mind. Like, it lets me vent, it releases me from suffocating memories and thoughts, and yes, it liberates me.

I guess all of that works because it keeps my mind busy. Maybe that's the key? To have my mind busy until the pain and suffering fades away with time.

About sharing the art I've done I have two objections:

1. It's in spanish (no different languages than english are allowed in forums) and

2. It is too personal and I think I'm not ready to share it. But I will some day.

Thank you so much for this post. I loved it. Stay firetastic! 💜Your big and silly sister who loves you: Me 🤭

@Fireskye13, hello there!

Icebreaker: What is your favorite form of art?

My favorite form of art is either coloring or drawing because I enjoy watching anime and reading webtoons, depends on the story.

Question 1: Do/Have you used art to deal with your stress and or trauma?

Yeah. It's fun to make random lines and colors on a piece of paper.

Question 2: would you care to share a piece of art you created with us?

No thanks. :) Most of the artwork I have done are a bunch of messy doodles. cheeky

Thanks for the check-in, and take care.
