Hi, wonderful community !

The topic I bring to you in this check-in is:

Routines

I differentiate here Routines, which are rules of behavior we impose ourselves even if we don’t feel like it (”I will go to bed at 10 PM every night”), from Habits, that are behaviors we spontaneously do at certain times, like watching TV at night, or eating pasta on Sundays, which not necessarily come from self imposed rules.

When a self-imposed routine becomes a habit, we have achieved the highest degree of incorporating a positive behavior into our lives. For example, we now exercise at certain times because we feel the need to do it. We now want to go to bed at 10 PM. We eat only healthy food because it pleases us the most.

By acquiring a new, positive habit we have changed ourselves for the better.

Paradoxically, while routines restrict our freedom in the short term (“it’s 7 PM, I have to walk 20 minutes, and I don’t feel like”), they increase our freedom in the longer term. They help us become the person we want to be. That is, the person that practices these routines we have freely chosen, and reaps its benefits. By choosing and following routines, we expand our freedom.

Routines in a crisis.

Every time we feel our world is falling apart, and our life is out of control, we naturally tend to discontinue our normal routines and habits.

But, as much as we can, we should try to keep them.

Keeping some old or new basic routines during a crisis, gives us a sense of control over our lives, which is opposite to the feeling of been totally subject to external forces, like leaves blown by the wind.

The sense of control makes us stronger. In turn, this feeling of strength could be a base from which to regain and normalize our life.

Routines and Trauma.

For our unconscious, time does not pass. There, we are always powerless subjects of external forces that might hurt us. A main characteristic of Trauma is that, in the very depths of this atemporal unconscious, the traumatic event is happening all the time.

This negative unconscious content resurfaces more or less often as bad memories, intrusive thoughts, or flashbacks.

We must counteract this false unconscious belief with all the tools we can muster. In particular, we should establish the opposite reality in our lives. A life in which it is absolutely clear that we are in control. And safe.

All real things we can establish in our lives that refute that false belief, and distance ourselves from the nature and conditions of the traumatic event, are steps forward in the direction of healing.

They are permanent “grounding” anchors to the present, reminding constantly ourselves that now we are in control and safe.

We should design our whole life having this in mind. This involves, among many things, choosing the people we meet, the places we go, decorating the environment we live in, and in particular establishing, as much as possible, the things we do.

In this sense, choosing, establishing, and following routines, could become a valuable resource to advance in our healing path.

@WelcomeToChat, Hello!

- How do you feel today ?

I often feel lazy to do my school task, It's difficult to concentrate. Other than that, I'm fine.

- Do you follow routines chosen by yourself ?

Yes and no. My routine is loose, I ended up doing what I want to do especially with my gadgets. Additionally, I also followed what my parents want as well: family prayers, mealtime, etc. Frankly, I felt restricted as long as I live with them. They are protective, but they have positive aspects as well! I know that they are trying their best.

- What new routines would you like to establish for yourself ?

Can't tell. It may or might not happen. I will probably set a healthier routine in my future.

Have a nice day!

@SnippyHam

HI Ham !

I'm glad that you feel well, just a little lazy.

Lazy is OK...

It seems that you love your gadgets !

You sound very genuine and real. Like you are comfortable with the way you are. That's great !

I agree that some of the order established by your parents is positive. It helps organize your life in a predictable way, and that is reassuring.

I encourage you to make real that healthier routine you envision for yourself in the future.

All the best !

Marcelo.

Dear Rebekah:

I'm sorry you feel so tired.

I hope you find time the rest of the weekend to rest well.

It's good that you have both a morning and a night routine.

They might help organize your life and feel more in control.

I remember the walking routine you want to establish. Great goal !

Go for it !

All the best !

Marcelo

@mytwistedsoul

Hi !

I'm sorry that you feel depressed right now. I hope it's only mild depression.

When it happens to me, and I have the time (like during weekends), I tune to it by listening to melancholic music. So I feel depressed but OK in a way...

I am glad to hear that you have your life very well structured and organized. That's certainly a source of strength.

Regarding self-care, given that you are so good at establishing and following routines, you can incorporate self-care activities into your routine. For example, I force myself to listen one hour to music every day, with total focus on that, even if I don't feel like it.

It might sound strange forcing yourself to do something pleasant, but if not, sometimes you are carried away by daily activities, the day has passed, and you didn't have your "self-care" moment.

Thank you for your kind words !

All the best,

Marcelo.

@WelcomeToChat Thank you for your reply :) It makes alot of sense - the music is an outlet - a release. Like a relief valve. I used to be able do that better I think - but Idk. Things got so messed up and I started pushing all emotions down. I know I shouldn't because it catches up eventually. I think I've been doing it for so long - I'm not sure how to stop. Everything gets muted right away - I need to do better

You're right I can fit it into the routine and I might have to force it at the beginning but it will get easier. Now I just need to do it :)

Thank you - take care

@Fireskye13

Hi Skye !

Thank you for your kind words !

As I answered to the first post, some routines in your life, even if established by your parents, are very positive.

They give order and predictability to your life, and that is reassuring.

Hang tough stay pawsome ur friend !
