Traumatic Experiences Community Check-In June 22, 2020
I often tell a joke I read in a comic once. It goes like this. Heard a joke once: Man goes to the doctor. He says he's depressed. He says life seems harsh and cruel. He says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. The doctor says, 'Treatment is simple. The great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up.' The man bursts into tears. He then says, 'But doctor…I am Pagliacci.' Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.
The point of it is that we often do so much to lift the spirits of others yet we often find we cannot lift our own spirits. This is why practicing self care is so important for all of us. So we dont feel like Pagliacci. Many of us find we can make anyone laugh except ourselves.
There are many ways to practice self care and it is very true that one cannot truly hope to be beneficial to others unless they are beneficial to themselves. Whether that activity be riding a bike or painting a picture, we should all do something everyday which truly brings joy to us. There may be some out there who dont have that ability and for them it is truly difficult to find a happy place. Finding joy in the small and simple things may be the only cause of escape from the difficulties in their lives. I use aroma therapy because its an easy practice to utilize and costs very little to obtain the essential oils used for it. Lavender provides me with a calming feeling that takes away all the negative vibes even if it is only for a moment. Sometimes even therapy doesnt provide us with the satisfaction we seek and in these moments it is truly up to us as individuals to utilize what resources we have to lift ourselves up from our despair and find solace.
I often mention meditation because it has truly helped me to cope and overcome my past struggles, but the truth is there were times I couldnt concentrate long enough to meditate on anything. It was only through constant studying and trying to understand why I felt how I felt that I was able to learn how to overcome my own struggles. We each ultimately have to find the way forward which works for us as individuals so no it truly doesnt matter what strategies I may present for all of you to try. So instead of pitching ideas I will ask you all what you do when you fall into despair. I will ask you what helps you to overcome the pain and the memories. Whether it be horseback riding, painting, running, or simply breathing. All of us have done something to prevent those memories from taking over. I will keep this check in short and sweet because I originally had another one planned and was going to go with it but Ill save it for Wednesday. I felt this one should be more personal. I will end this check-in by asking you all four questions:
1. What helps you to overcome the memories when they come flooding back?
2. How often do you try to bring joy to the lives of others?
3. What will you do today as a self care activity?
4. How are you feeling at this moment?
5. This is not a question I just want you all to know that I care.
As always I want to wish you all a better today than yesterday in hopes for a much brighter tomorrow my friends!!!

@Understandingempath Hey How are you?
Busy - keeping busy helps to not think. Sometime's when they get too bad. Sometimes taking a moment to ground myself and remind that I'm in the here and now - not the past. Sometimes reaching out to someone here helps bring and keep things in the present. But - Idk - lately I've been having trouble with that
Not as often as I should - I guess. I try to give back positively to people here but - soemtimes words fail me. Or - lol - the anxiety is going strong and I worry about being a pita or saying the wrong thing. My social circle is pretty small in real life - like non-existant - lol
Well today I'll probably work in the shop - I'm doing a carving for the art festival thing here. And when my hands want to cooperate - it's calming. If they don't want to work right - then a walk in the woods or play with the dogs
Today - there's a mix of anxiety and depression - which I still think they should cancel each other out - Idk - I feel - cautious I guess - Idk if thats even an emotion
Thank you - I hope you have a good day
@mytwistedsoul
I am doing well my friend thank you for asking. Its good to keep busy and its always nice to have people to reach out to. I use grounding techniques often to keep me in the moment. As of now my social circle is mostly people here on cups but I see that changing as things begin to open back up in the outside world. We often worry that we will say the wrong thing but I find its better to say whats on our minds without regret than to worry so much we stay silent. I am interested to know what sort of carving you are doing for this art festival. Wood working has always intrigued me. On the Hopi reservation that is a favorite pastime. They carve Kachina dolls out of driftwood to sell to tourists and amongst themselves though prior to capitalism they carved them as gifts freely given to others. Caution is not necessarily a bad thing but too much caution could definitely weigh a person down over time. I'm sorry to hear that you're anxious and depressed. I would say one day at a time but you've heard plenty of that from others. Instead I will hope that your day improves and the stressors around you dissipate. Thank you for participating in today's check-in!
@Understandingempath That was really cool about the kachina dolls. I had seen pictures before but never really looked into them. There's alot of lore behind them - thank you. My wood work isn't as nice as theirs - I usually make furniture pieces - tbh. Mostly stuff out of cedar - sometimes oak or walnut - Idk - if it's really a secret but - I'm working on a dragonfly - so shh - lol. I'll keep the self degrading comments to myself though
Yeah - caution isn't allways my friend. Keeps me quiet - I get tired of being quiet
You're welcome and thank you again
@mytwistedsoul
Your secrets safe with me. I tried my hand at carving with them but my kachina didn't turn out so well. I also feel you're likely selling yourself short on your skills. To be passionate about ones work regardless of the level of skill is important.
@mytwistedsoul
PART 2: you make furniture?!!! You are sooo cool!!

@secretGrapefruit302
I'm sorry to hear you have so much difficulty handling the thoughts. If you would ever like to chat 1:1 I am here to listen as are many other wonderful listeners. I can't imagine what it is like to lose a child. I would like to apologize if this post has caused you to feel terrible as this was not the intention of it. I can recommend activities like painting or art to get negative emotions out onto a blank canvass but it would be entirely up to you to try any of them. When I have negative thoughts I put them on paper in the form of fictional writing. Thats just what works for me. Again my PM's are open if you ever wish to chat.
@secretGrapefruit302
im so sorry about your kid. My heart breaks for you. Sounds like your going through a lot. Hugs. I really hope you know how special you are.

Writing helps me as well my friend and I am sure your daughter is very thankful to have you in her life. When my thoughts turn against me I drown them out with music and meditate. I can relate in that regard. I do hope your day has improved and thank you for participating in today's check-in. I do appreciate it very much.
@RedHawk6547
i bet you are an awesome parent! And writing is a great release!!

5. This is not a question I just want you all to know that I care.
😀😃😄😁😍🥰
@FigureskatingEquestrian
You have some wonderful coping techniques at your disposal. Even trying to fit yoga and reading in after a 13 hour shift. That is very commendable. You do alot to bring joy to the lives of others. I've seen it on this thread alone. I do hope you remember to feed yourself though. The key to a happy life in my opinion is a full stomach.
@Understandingempath
non worries. Making a sandwich
1. Nothing works 100% yet. Reassuring myself I'm ok in this moment, I'm not back at the time or place, I have ways of protecting myself now, etc ways of bringing myself to the present. Sometimes just have to ride it out, remember it all in detail for however long
2. This is something I'm working on. I'm trying to fix myself first before I can put out joy into the world
3. Sleep before midnight and listen to a guided meditation beforehand
4. Discouraged. What has happened in the news just in the last month has reminded me that trauma can resurface at any time and in different ways. On the brightside, I was able to tell my therapist some things I've kept inside for fear of judgment. She gave this skeptical look but she is human
5. This is not a question I just want you all to know that I care.
That's very sweet of you
@Lexloveslife
I am glad you have ways to bring yourself to the present. Many others are unable to do so. I rarely focus on myself or my own feelings instead focusing on others. This is the one I have to work on the most. Meditation has always been helpful for me so I hope it is for you as well. It is easy to get swept up by the news, even more so with the current events taking place. Practicing mindfulness and staying grounded have assisted me in that regard. Thank you for participating in this check-in and I do hope you have a wonderful day!
